Top of the Morning to You

Top of the Morning to You

Top of the Morning to You, this phrase came to me when I looked at this first photo. Because I am looking at the top of her head. It is a good way to start the week, looking at Mrs. Cardinal here, her beau is farther down on the post.

Top of the Morning to You

She almost appears to have a smile to me, with bright eyes. Of course I took this photo before we had all the snow.

The photos below are of the Male Cardinal. These two have been a couple in my backyard for years now. He keeps guard all summer while she is on her nest and he does a great job of keeping intruders away.

  1. Cardinals are one of my favorite birds too. I have had a nesting pair for years in the barberry bush. I’m worried I’ve not seen them much this year. I saw them more when I was still feeding the peanuts to the birds and squirrels here at the house.

      1. I’m worried about mine now that I don’t feed them on a regular basis like before. Can’t do it as I don’t trust the hawk … I see feathers at the Park every so often, so I know a Mourning Dove has met its match. Because it is a ground feeder, I have seen them several times and makes me sad.

  2. Incredible pictures!! Did you use a zoom lens? These are so great! We have cardinals, too, but they are so fast at the feeder. Ha ha. They don’t sit still very long. πŸ™‚

  3. Such happy little birds to bring in the new year! And amazing photos, as always.
Looking forward to the next proud bird to cross your camera!

  4. Well top ‘O the Marnin’ to you Miss O Johnson. Great pictures. Actually I have a question for you. There is a bird at my feeders It is dark gray with a crest, but is smaller that a jay or cardinal but larger than a titmouse any idea what it might be??

    1. I can just hear the accent by reading your words.πŸ™‚ I looked up your description of the gray bird and the only thing that comes up with a Crest is the titmouse. The only other gray bird I know of the size you are talking about is a Cat bird. But it has darker feathers on its head, not quite a crest.

  5. They are my favorites! I remember the first time I noticed that cardinals stayed the winter…imagine my joy! That was back when I confused flickers with woodpeckers and such other nonsense πŸ™‚ There was much to learn πŸ™‚ Such beautiful photos…thank you always for sharing.

    1. You are very welcome, I have one pair that live in my backyard and they have been back here for a few years now. All year long, I love seeing them at the feeder.πŸ™‚

  6. Thanks for sharing! I love cardinals. We have a pair in our yard too, but I’m not sure where they are nesting. That’s probably for the best. πŸ™‚

  7. Thanks, and the “Top of the Morning” to you, also! I love to get up early and get the day going. Not the most joyous day, unless we concentrate more on celebrating the life, and not the death of a young friend whose funeral is today! Always love your posts, and you do have some nice closeups of this beautiful bird.

  8. I assume Mrs. Cardinal visited your bird feeder. So naturally she has a smile on her face when her belly is full. πŸ™‚
