There are Seven Types of Grosbeaks

There are Seven Types of Grosbeaks , and I have photographed two of the seven. The male Evening Grosbeak returned today. They add a splash of color to winter bird feeders every few years, when large flocks depart their northern breeding grounds en masse to seek food to the south.

The Male Evening Grosbeak

The yellow-bodied, dusky-headed male has an imposing air thanks to his massive bill and fierce eyebrow stripe. This declining species is becoming uncommon, particularly in the eastern United States. So I felt very lucky to see these two males come by to visit today.

And here is the Rose Breasted Grosbeak, I took this photo last year. I was so surprised to see this one. It was actually my first sighting of this colorful bird. What a difference between the two in color.

    1. They are so colorful, especially this time of year, that stripe of yellow on the eyes and wings really shows up on a gloomy day. ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. Thanks for your photos. I didn’t realize they were in decline as I had moved from central northern Canada to Eastern Canada where they are quite scarce.

  2. They are beautiful birds and photography. Are these endemic to your area! We have different GB but not these. We have some 5 species only in Nepal
