Portraits of the Wood Duck

Portraits of the Wood Duck

Portraits of the Wood Duck, this is my first year seeing the Wood Duck and it is quite amazing to me. I took all of these photos through a window so they are not extremely clear. But it still shows the detailed color of this beautiful bird. As if he was painted by hand, to create such beautiful lines, curves and color. Nature, wildlife, truly amazing to witness such extraordinary beauty to me.

  1. You have very clean windows Sandra – these are great pictures of the Wood Duck. I only recently learned that these are the only ducks that nest in a tree – unusual and beautiful ducks.

      1. I just learned that a few weeks ago. A fellow blogger who lives near Portland, Oregon goes to a one park and sees them there and she mentioned this fact to me. I was hoping to see some in that small forest last week after the guy from the local Audubon Society took some pictures of a pair in a tree.

  2. Pictures worthy of a beautiful duck. I’d like a hat that looked as striking as this duck’s head (but not from his feathers, OF COURSE.)

  3. Hi Sandra. Again, big fan, infrequent commenter. These are great photos. We have a pair right now that come up into our yard to feed. The males are spellbinding. We’ve watched them all spring. The momma got fat and pregnant and now she’s back to her former size. Pretty sure they have eggs in a nest somewhere close by. My wife read up on it and the female will leave the nest for an hour to feed then back to the eggs. Poppa keeps a very close eye on her when they’re out and about. Our house backs up to a canal that goes out to a lake. I think they prefer the calmness of the water around us. I think you are right about the bugs. Our backyard is mostly green weeds because we don’t want any chemicals to runoff in the water. The mallards and the woodies feed very close to each other. They seem to get along just fine.

    1. Thank you Al, this is my first year seeing these beautiful ducks. I noticed that about the males. He looks like he is on guard watching over the female. I hope they have a nest here at our pond. I see them come visit every day. The pond has lots of cat tails and hiding places for them. It is so enjoyable watching all the wild life. Have a wonderful day Al.

  4. It’s kind of weird to see a duck on grass instead of water. 🙂 Do you have a pond nearby?

    1. Yes Jo, we have a pond out back with a small ditch that water goes in from rain to the pond. The ducks come out and walk around in the ditch and then walk around in the yard sometimes. Maybe they eat bugs to, I am not sure.

      1. I didn’t know you have water so close to your home. That’s why I was puzzled. It’s so cool at your place. 🙂

  5. Your Wood Duck is a very beautiful and artistically designed bird, our have much more earthy colours, which is good if you want to remain inconspicuous.

    1. The males are so colorful, and the female is all brown with a whitish circle around her eye. Amazing designs in nature.
