Full Moon and Black Bears

Full Moon and Black Bears

Full Moon and Black Bears, what excitement I had last week starting on Tuesday. This is my first encounter of being this close to Black Bears and they payed me a visit in our yard 3 nights in a row. At first I only saw the young bear when I looked out my cabin window. I thought how cool, it looks like a nice little black bear. But than all of a sudden, Mama bear came out of the woods and I believe my heart skipped a beat, she is just beautiful. The hair rises on my arm just writing about it. (video below)

When we were kids, my siblings and I, our grandfather would ask, ” Who wants to go to the dump?”, one of my most favorite childhood memories. Why you might ask?, we went there to watch the bears come out in the evenings. We did not have movie theaters back then. That was our weekend entertainment and that is where I begin my journey of the love for wild life, from my Grandfather.

Full Moon and Black Bears

I have only seen a couple bears over the last few years. I was beginning to lose hope that I may never see another one. From loss of habitat and food for the animals. So you can guess my delight when I was sitting at the table by the window and saw these two beautiful creatures walk out of the woods.

They were checking out my bird feeders which were pretty much empty, but it kept them entertained for a short while. I slipped out the side door of my cabin to take some photos that would be a little clearer than through the window and then I just stood there and watched them until they wandered back into the woods.

I set up my trail camera for the next night and they came back, actually they visited for 3 nights. I have made a two part video that I will be putting on my You Tube Channel as well.

Some of this video was taken with a trail camera. You can see the full screen version on my You Tube channel by clicking here; The American Black Bear by Sandra J

  1. I’m late to the bear party here Sandra but what a great post this is – very exciting to see a bear and cub and in the video, in the beginning part, I can imagine your face as you’re gazing at the cub and around the corner comes Mom. It looked like they kept checking for food over and over and I thought they might be hot, as I noticed the Mama bear slobbering a little but the temp on the trail camera did not indicate it was all that hot. The video was great as are these pictures. Our family rented a cottage for two weeks in 1968 near Alpena. The owner mentioned having to drive to the dump and beware of bears when we got there, so we didn’t make too many expeditions as I recall.

    1. I saw that also, will it stay do you think. Or turn black. Last night was the first night Tuck did not show up, in the last 8 days.

        1. That is good to hear. It will be easier to identify him in the future with that. I still take my dog out on a leash just in case. Have a great weekend Wayne, it is 95 deg F. today.

  2. Wow what a beautiful writing ❤️😊 and if you don’t mind can you read also my blog please I’m new here

  3. Amazing!!! It must be so nice to see black bears often! I have never seen one but after reading your article, I wish I could see one .

        1. Yes, I use to see more when I was very young around here. I had not seen any in a while. I saw just one last year. So it was nice to see two healthy bears this year.

  4. Beautiful!!! We have a black bear living on our farm, but with this heat wave he’s not coming out much . . . also, he seems to be a bit camera shy – I’ve had better luck with the groundhogs. LOL

    1. I know what you mean, last year I saw one bear come out of our back woods, I barely moved to go get a camera and it took off. These two pretty much ignored me. 😊

  5. Wonderful video. I remember as a kid hearing about people going to the dump to watch the bears. I never got a chance to do it, but it’d be fun watching them.

    1. Yes, we did it a lot, when ever we had to haul garbage up there, sometimes there would be other people there and we would sit on the hood of the cars like we were at a outdoors movie theater. 🙂

    1. Yes, it is a beautiful thing to see, they are quite amazing animals. I have not seen any for years, so it was nice to see a mother and her older cub.

    1. It was so nice to see them that close, I have not seen any bears in so long. They have such a nice coat of fur this time of year.

  6. What a wonderful surprise to see black bears so close. You live in the middle of the forest, it seems to me, but what a pleasure to also see this doe. The fauna comes to you and these are precious moments.

    1. Yes, I feel I live in their territory, so I have great respect for the wildlife and give them their privacy. I hope to see her fawn. 🙂

      1. I guess you could be in the woods with a bare behind and a bear behind at the same time. Skeeters would get you for sure.

  7. Always good to see bears when safety is nearby. They are amazing to watch and a bit scary if you loom at the size of their paws and claws. Great captures Sandra. Allan

    1. Yes Laura, it is something one does not always get to experience, wild life seen in its natural environment is beautiful.

  10. What a delight must it be and scary too, Sandra! Yet, the experience was more of delight, nostalgia, and a fascinating ng theatre. Not all people are previlage to see those cuddly bears that close for 3 nights; they probably searched for Baloo! Superb shots! Blessings to you and your family!

    1. It was quite something, to be that close and see the pure beauty of such an animal. I will always remember it, wild life in its natural habitat is inspiring to see.

  11. What an encounter ! Black bears right in front of your cabin door. Great shots and nice videos Sandra. Thanks for sharing these special moments.

  12. When you said, “Sit back and enjoy,” I didn’t realize what a treat I was in for. Never have I seen such wonderful and close-up shots of wild bears and these were magnificent specimens. Absolutely stunning. Thanks Sandra.

    1. Thank you, they are such a beautiful animal, even more so when one can see them this close. To see her eyes was amazing to me, as she was looking around and then looked right at me. Gave me goosebumps 😊
