Bayou Lacassine River
Bayou Lacassine River – this campground is right along the Lacassine river. First thing I saw as we are driving down the long country road to the campground, is this beautiful brahman cow and calves. I see 3 calves, not sure if they are all hers. I had to take a photo.

Along the riverbanks and right beside the campground, alligators are everywhere. When the sun comes out, you can count on seeing them stretched along the edges, soaking in the warmth—completely still, blending into the landscape until one subtle movement gives them away.

Much of southern Louisiana is prime habitat for the American alligator, especially in wetlands, bayous, and slow-moving rivers. The state is known for having one of the highest populations in the U.S., with well over a million alligators. Areas near water, like this campground, often feel especially dense because the animals gather along the banks to regulate their body temperature in the sun.

Alligators lining the shoreline—isn’t unusual for the region, but it’s still something that never quite loses its sense of awe.

I also have a couple of new birds to add to my life list. Even tho I do believe I saw more alligators than birds this trip.
