The Unique Mule
The Unique Mule – my niece has a few mules as well. Such a unique animal.
They become extremely loyal and trustworthy and their personalities are so enjoyable. Their surefootedness and brains under saddle will ease you even in the trickiest of trails. They will keep you laughing and bring a smile to your face even if you’re having a terrible day. Plus, who can resist their ears.
Always take a photo of a mule with a wide angle lens, makes their ears really stand out. So cute.
Mule Facts
First, let’s clarify what a mule is. A mule is the offspring of a male donkey (a jack) and a female horse (a mare). A horse has 64 chromosomes, and a donkey has 62. The mule ends up with 63. Mules can be either male or female, but, because of the odd number of chromosomes, they can’t reproduce.
The term “mule” is used for either the cross of male donkey on female horse, or the cross of female donkey on male horse, although the latter cross is more correctly known as a “hinny.” Mules and hinnies each have one horse and one donkey parent,

Usually I do not read article on blogs, however I would like to say that this write-up very compelled me to take a look at and do it! Your writing style has been amazed me. Thank you, very nice article.
Thank you 😊
Not a lot of experience with Mules, but there is a donkey down the road that absolutely hates me ha.
Donkeys pick what they want to like, they can be very stubborn. 🙂
I didn’t know those facts about mules – thank you for sharing them Sandra. Good to know about the wide-angle lens for making the ears stand up. 🙂
Yes, amazing they know so much about their chromosomes.
Interesting.
Thanks Sandra. I remember learning about a mule’s heritage as a kid though further explanation never came until later. It is interesting that mules, which must have originally come about through natural means, came to be known for certain good qualities and were then bred purposely, especially for work and enterprise. I did not know that about the chromosomes but the numbers are also very interesting:
Horse: The number 8 is an excellent number. It is the Biblical number of resurrection, regeneration, and new beginnings (8 x 8 = 64).
Donkey: 62 is the product of the 1st prime number (2 = division) times the 11th prime number (31). 11 is a number marking disorder, disorganization, imperfection, and disintegration.
Mule: 63 is primarily 7 x 9 (3 = divine perfection). 7 represents spiritual perfection while 9 means finality or judgment, and signifies conclusion.
Very interesting RJ, the number 7 seems to come up a lot in my readings and daily life. It says it is mentioned over 700 times in the Bible,
I can see a bit of both parents in each. My uncle used to tie a mule on a short lead to a new horse, or a rowdy calf, to help break it in. Worked every time.
Yes, I have had friends that do that. They work great for that.
Adorables !
To be honest, this was new for me too. Thanks Sandra.
You are very welcome, they are unique animals and just so cute with those giant ears 🙂
Nature is strange, I guess the first mules were accidental. Are they popular creatures to be bred intentionally?
Yes, they breed them intentionally now, they are extremely sure footed, meaning they use them for pack mules in the high country, great for riding on trails, adapt to desert climates. They are an all around animals for all uses and abilities. They are very calm and my nieces children have all learned how to ride on a mule. They live a long time.
Are they both as stubborn as a donkey?
Kind regards,
Not as stubborn 🙂 these here at my nieces farm are quite calm and the little kids ride them all the time.
💕🐎
Thank you very much 🙂
I learned something new!
Yes, they are unique and a lot of people don’t know about them. My brother has them as well, they like trail riding with them because they are so good at navigating any type of terrain. Better then horses.
One of my online friends picked an AirBnB because it had donkeys to feed/pet.
I have heard there are some places like that especially out west
She did it in the east… somewhere near PA.
Mules have so much persona!
They do, these guys here are so sweet and calm. 🙂
