The Beauty of Spring

The Beauty of Spring

The Beauty of Spring, I just love when the migrating birds start coming back. It was gorgeous weather all weekend and I did not take one photo or open my computer at all. Sometimes you just have to take a moment and enjoy the spring weather when it arrives.

Even though the grass is still brown, I know any day now the wild flowers will start to come up and I can see the buds on the trees now also. So today I went to the lake to see if the swans were still there and they were. There was still a little ice on the water but it will all be gone soon.

This beautiful duck is back as well. It is called the Hooded Merganser Duck, there are 4 types of Merganser’s. I saw this one and the Common Merganser. I will have more photos coming this week. These are so cool looking I think with their crown of feathers. This is a male and the females are just as pretty. The females look like they have mohawks.

  1. The swans are beautiful as is the Merganser Duck. I look forward to seeing more pictures of all of them now that the ice will be gone and Spring migration begins in earnest.

  2. Do the Trumpeter Swans live at your place in the summer time? I am asking because here in Burlington, Ontario, they come only for the winter time. For me it is strange, it is not really warm place to stay by the winter time here. Very often Ontario Lake is frozen at the shore. However, year by year they do this voyage.

    1. They are amazing birds, they arrive here around April. They are at a small lake not far from me. It is secluded and quiet which is a great place to have a nest for them. I only have seen the one pair though. They leave in the fall.

      1. Here in Canada they almost disappeared because of hunting. Then some enthusiast decided to save them and created an organization to do so. Fortunately, nowadays I can see at winter time numerous of them.

        1. I know, I had never seen a trumpeter swan until last year. They are rare here in the mid west, but they have been introducing more and more to these remote areas and they keep coming back now.

  3. How exciting that your migrating birds have begun to return. Last month I was up in my hometown visiting family when the migrating birds began to pass through. My brother and father maintain wood duck boxes along the river, and they waited until I could be there to hike out, clean them, and give them a new filling of cedar chips. We were surprised and thrilled to discover several hundred Canadian geese feeding in the corn field as well as a good showing of four types of ducks along the river- mallard, wood duck, black duck, and the common merganser. They were quick to take flight which gave my brother an opportunity to give me a lesson on identifying the type of duck based on its flight pattern. These are my truly my favorite kinds of lessons.

    1. It is so exciting isn’t it, seeing all the colorful birds this time of b year. It is amazing all the different kinds of ducks as well. I need to put up some duck boxes and houses for owls. They are good at catching mice and there are lots of mice here.

    1. I could use a few of those around here. They are good for catching mice. I have not seen any hawks yet.
