Starting to See Cactus Now

Starting to See Cactus Now

Starting to See Cactus Now, I always love seeing cactus when in the south. So many different kinds, but we are traveling through this area in February and March, so a lot of the cactus do not look so good this time of year, as it is colder temperatures even in Texas.

We did find this bridge on the map and drove over to see it, I find the construction of older bridges fascinating as well. This is actually a historic bridge named Buchanan Dam Bridge, built in 1937. It was a perfect location at the time below the dam on the Colorado River.

It is a pedestrian bridge now. You can walk across it and when you do there is a constant humming sound, like music almost. From the wind or the traffic going across the newer bridge up river.

  1. I’m a huge bridge admirer and always seeking out new designs – figuring out what the design principles were – triangles, semicircles, tension, keystoned etc. This one clearly used triangles. Comes in handy as I’ve had to build some pretty big bridges to get to the back half of our lot which is across a 50 foot stream.

    1. Wow, that sounds nice, the 50 ft stream out back. We have a pond at our place and I love hearing the spring peepers, aka frogs. When their eggs hatch it is like a black cloud moving in the water. Frogs everywhere.

  2. The heart-shaped cactus is unusual – at least you got to see the cacti, still amazing, even without th flowers. Amazing how old they can get.

      1. Do they pry the spines off or use cactus types that just are furry or tiny spines. I mentioned before that my mom had cactus gardens for years and she got a spine embedded in her wrist or forearm from reaching over a cactus and she had to have it removed as it got infected. Animals are tougher than we are though!

        1. I am not sure how they eat them and I have seen pictures of birds making nest right in the middle of the spines.

          1. I have read about those birds – they are cactus wrens. I saw and bought my mom a book about cacti as she had her two windowsill cactus gardens for years and knew she’d enjoy reading about them. That’s be like a pincushion with pins sticking out – not comfy when building a nest, that’s for sure.

  4. I enjoyed the heart shaped cactus and the fence photo especially. I know you do mostly nature so tomorrow I challenge you to do a different photo for a day – food or architecture. It’s up to you of course ♥

    1. I will take that challenge, I love doing request. Well, it won’t be food probably, we eat pretty plain Jane food when camping. 😊

  5. Thank you for your work Sandra. Great pictures. Nice shot of an old but well-maintained bridge. It evokes traveling and the road ahead. And one doesn’t often see a heart-shaped cactus. Still heading north?

    1. Thank you RJ, I do love seeing the old bridges, it is nice that they leave them to help see the history of these smaller areas. Yes, we have been holding up in eastern Nevada for the past week, a cold spell has come across the mountain region here. We are finally moving farther north tomorrow. Trying to avoid the bits of snow Oregon keeps getting.

  6. 💜 It’s actually ‘Cacti’ SupaSoulSis Being The Pedantic Writer I AM; 😏🥰🤓
