Fun Surprise in the Yard

Fun Surprise in the Yard

Fun Surprise in the Yard, the wild turkeys have found my bird feeder and come by to clean up all the left overs on the ground. But as you can see, there is a white turkey in the bunch. I have never seen a wild whitish turkey. It says about 1 out of 100 might end up white.

The photos are a little blurry because I had to take the photo through the window. The minute I open the door they all take off running and surprisingly, they can run really fast.

  1. You’re lucky to see not only wild turkeys but this white one – look at the odds of seeing that. At Kensington Park, the photographer who does the daily videos and still shots has discovered a white deer. Totally white/albino deer and its two fawns were regular brown with white spots, not white like she was. Are they loud while lapping up the birdseed?

    1. They are actually very quiet. They just show up out of the woods. The males will start making more noise I guess as they thump their wings during mating season.

      1. Interesting they are so quiet. I was thinking of the song the turkeys always make if there are a lot of them, like at a turkey farm. My news station on the radio always goes to Turkeyville a few days before Thanksgiving to capture the sounds of the turkeys as there are thousands of them.

  2. WOW! Beautiful! I wonder if I saw a turkey the other day?! It was a bit quick, I was driving by a bird that had really pretty feathers. It looks quite like the turkey in your photos. :’)

    1. Could be, I have not seen that many over the years and usually they are so far away also. This is the closest I have ever been to them.

        1. It has been an exciting week watching these beautiful birds come around here. I only see them maybe once or twice a week also. 🙂

  3. Wow Sandra! I too have never seen a whitish turkey before. She is beautiful! What a treat! The turkey to the far right also looks like she has a greater amount of white feathers than usual. Wondering if those two hens were from the same clutch?

    1. It is amazing to see Beth, I have never seen wild turkeys this close and they are so pretty, especially the males this time of year.

  4. Very cool! We have lots and lots of turkeys hanging around the neighborhood, but I have never seen a white one. I wonder if it’s albino or just light in color?

    1. I am not sure, I have never seen one either. Also I did not know the males were so colorful, the sun was out the other day and I am going to put some photos of two of the males in the group. They have, green, redish, blueish, colored feathers. You only notice it when the sun is out.

    1. It is Mary, I took some of the photos through the window and then I slowly opened the door to try and get a shot with out them running off.

    1. I took some the other day when the sun was out and I was so surprised at how colorful the males are. I will put those on for tomorrow.

  5. Gorgeous! We used to have a wild turkey that was close to 4′ tall when I worked in Washington, DC. We called him Clyde after our Chief of Staff. He used to walk along the road and had legs that seemed twice the length of a normal turkey’s legs. One day he disappeared and we figure he ended up on someone’s stew pot. Wish I had taken his picture–I saw him multiple times as did several other people. I’ve never seen another turkey like him. (And DC is full of turkeys mostly non-avian.)

    1. That sounds so amazing, turkeys are pretty big birds in the wild, I would love for them to come around more often being they like to eat bugs and such 🙂
