Don’t Forget to Look Up

Don’t Forget to Look Up

Don’t Forget to Look Up, well I went for a walk to my favorite little lake here and they have a dock over the water and some benches to sit on. I walked up to the benches and sat down one early morning. I was enjoying the view in front of me and then I looked up and to my surprise, right above me stood this beautiful Egret bird, as quiet as it could be.

I slowly raised my camera up to photograph this bird high above me. Then it flew off, what a fun surprise this was. Sometimes I focus to much on what is right in front of me and I miss the beauty that surrounds me from above looking down at me.

  1. Wow – good thing you looked up. It is both statuesque and the angle you shot the photo shows that long neck and especially long and slender beak.

    1. I did not even see it there until I was already sitting on the bench. It stood there as I walked up and did not move. Amazing birds. πŸ™‚

      1. Yes, that’s amazing. I guess it figured you weren’t a threat since it was up high in a tree. One time I saw a heron in a tree – not a common occurrence as they are usually in the water fishing or perched in a tree. So I saw it up high, and was trying to get a picture of it while standing in the middle of the perimeter path. Finally I got a shot, turned around and a police SUV was there waiting for me to move. I have no idea how long he was there and afterward, when I saw him, I was shocked. He just laughed – he knew I didn’t see him, even knew it before I turned around and had a shocked look on my face.

  2. Indeed, looking up can be very rewarding for bird watching and I think especially in trees. This bird looks quite at home and it is so good to get such beautiful blue skies in the background too.

  4. That is absolutely the truth although you will not often see a heron sitting in a tree, at least not in my experience. I also regularly look up in the hope of spotting an owl one day. So far without success….

  5. Beautiful Sandra ! So true there is so much we miss, even in a mindful moment, but birding helps us become more mindful and present in the moment, to hopefully catch what could otherwise be unwittingly missed. We are surrounded by beauty. πŸ™‚

  6. What a great encounter and reminder. With the big glass I tend to only look straight out and probably missing a bunch of stealthy birds right above me. That last shot is very stoic looking “Excuse me, do you happen to have any Grey Poupon?”

    1. Yes, I am surprised that it stayed there as I walked up the dock and sat down. I raised the camera so slowly straight up once I saw it, knowing it would be taking off any minute and it did after the shutter went. They do look like royalty standing there on one leg looking down at us. 😊
