Birds Can Make You Smile

Birds Can Make You Smile, they sure do lighten my day and that is why I love birding. Not only is it a challenge at times but some photos you just can’t help but smile when you see their expressions.

The pelicans of course, if you can catch them while they are doing a stretch, makes it look like they are smiling.

Take this photo of the Reddish Egret, it looks so regal and beautiful the way it holds its head up and the feathers blowing in the wind.

But you take a photo with it looking right at the camera does make one smile. Taking a photo of a bird looking at the camera is usually a no no just like photographing a person looking right at the camera. You always want the person to have a bit of a profile look, as they turn their head slightly and chin up is usually the best way for people and birds.

I don’t know what this bird is below, but looking right at the camera makes it look like it has a lot of feathers on top of the head.

  2. They are like humans who always look better with a side profile. The birds look goofy sometimes “straight on” and I’ve read that it is rare when a human has a perfectly symmetrical face and is 100% pleasing to the eye looking forward. (No matter what the TV and movie stars think, they are not perfect.)

    1. Yes, husband was a portrait photographer and never had people look straight at a camera. Always had them turn their shoulders a bit and chin up. Same for bird photos but birds don’t always listen to us.

      1. I remember that and thought that as I wrote the comment. Silly birds could be picture perfect … the side profiles were gorgeous and regal sandra.

  3. “Bird can make you smile” – couldn’t agree more … and birds can startle you if you are not ready for the goofy straight on head shots of some of them (especially the herons and bitterns ha). Enjoyed the shots!

    1. I love the straight on head shots, what a difference it makes to see them this way. They can look so elegant with a portrait photo and then they look at the camera. I can’t help but smile and chuckle at times.

    1. Thank you and thank you for giving me the name of the last bird. I am adding that to my list. I am up to 105 birds photographed now. 😊

  4. I love this post. I know what you mean about making you smile. I have a wood stork I enjoy seeing once a week when I’m near his pond.

      1. If they’re anything like crows, they have facial recognition. They come back ’cause they know you won’t hurt them.

  5. It looks like an American goldfinch to me, though it bring to mind a comment one birder made when we were in the filed trying to get a fix on a bird:” No field guide shows the best view of a bird. It’s always the guide I left in the car that has the perfect view. Actually, the field g” (LOL!)

      1. I get tedious commenting on birds IDs, but I always appreciated the help when I was less knowledgeable. Shorebirds are one group I generally hope someone with me is better than I at IDing. I’m terrible with most shorebirds!

        1. Me to, there are many different kind of pipers, seems like the difference is the length of beak and legs. I just can’t tell on some of those.

  6. Lovely pics Donna, the eagle almost looks cross-eyed and gave me a chuckle. The Egret is trying to look threatening by stretching its neck and giving you the stare. Love the close up of its head, looks so regal.
