2 or 3 New Birds to the List

2 or 3 New Birds to the List, 133 birds photographed.

This first bird here is part of the Jay family, this one is a Scrub Jay that we saw in Texas. There are 8 species of Jay’s and the blue is pretty on all of them.

This one below, we saw in the mountain area and I think it is a Mexican Jay. But, hard to say for sure, but we know it is a jay because of the size and the blue colors. It was pretty high up in the tree, so could not get a good look at it.

I believe this bird below is called the Hooded Oriole. Such a bright color and like all orioles they like to eat oranges.

  2. The Altamira and the Hooded look very similar but they do have a tell. There first wingbars are different colors – Altamira orange and the Hooded is white. From the glimpse of that bar in your shots, I think you are spot on that is a Hooded. Not up on my Mexican Jays, so can’t help you verify there, but the first one is definitely a Scrub Jay and purely based on your local, assume a Woodhouse. Nice adds!

    1. Thanks so much, I looked at so many photos of the orioles, and they were so close..just like the Mexican Jay and Scrub, so close..I do like the scrub Jay’s, they were everywhere in the Mountain areas.

  3. The Orioles are so vibrant – the owner of the local Wild Birds Unlimited store that I follow on Facebook just posted that he saw Orioles at their backyard feeder yesterday for the first time. The Scrub Jay looks so different than the Blue Jays I usually see – the same colors, but not the distinctive crest.

      1. Yes so vibrant. I know there was one at the Park a few years ago, but I never saw it. I saw a flash of orange and Googled to hear its call, but never saw it – maybe this year. There are Goldfinch and they sit on the thistles so I’m looking forward to seeing them this Summer.

  4. Scrub jays are protected in Florida. Was sad I didn’t see one when I was there. Now I know what I am looking for. Great picture Sandra,

  5. Wonderful. So glad for you! Beautiful birds, for sure! I have two full days where I am driving birders during the Spring Warbler Migration!!!!

    1. Thank you Marland, that sounds like so much fun, the warbler migration. How fun for you to be near that migration as well. I don’t have a photo of a warbler, well, I don’t think I do. We have missed most of the migration of birds on this trip. Just seeing a few birds that live in the areas year around so far.

  7. The oriole is striking. I love bright coloured birds and the oriole certainly qualifies plus orange is a colour I really like!

  8. You: “This one below, we saw in the mountain area and I think it is a Mexican Jay.”

Me: “Shouldn’t a Mexican Jay be called a Jota?”

… and this is my weird sense of humor.
