Wings Touching Water
Wings Touching Water – Awhile back I had mentioned how I wanted to take more photo of birds in flight with their wings just grazing the water. Well, pelicans are a good one for doing this because they ride the updrafts along the water, so they can glide for long periods of time and then flap their wings and stay close to the water.
So when we went back north this past spring, we had to stop at the Mississippi river, where you will always find some white pelicans and I was able to add a couple more photos to the list.

Great capture!! I completely relate to the pelican sitting in the water. That’s how I look, all ruffled and fluffled, before my morning cup of coffee and some quiet time.
Yes Beth,I certainly have those looks as well, especially today at 95 degrees out. Pelicans have the right idea.
Very dramatic shots how they are grazing the water … that one Pelican had ruffled feathers when sitting in the water – must’ve been very windy. I hope to see a white Pelican one day.
I am surprised there aren’t any your way. Must be to far for them to travel.
There is a restaurant about 30 miles from me called “Vincent V’s” and I had never heard about it, but it came up in my Facebook Feed as a sponsored ad. The first thing I noticed was a picture of several white pelicans on a rock in Lake Erie. Apparently the restaurant is right on the water and you can get a table, walk right off the dining area and swim in Lake Erie. They mention the pelicans … I was thinking of driving out there once all the cleanup is done from the tornado in Monroe … maybe just wait til next year. It could have been just one time they showed up or maybe people toss them food. So I guess they do come up here unless they were lost. π
Soaring…..sorry……
The cover photo on the Travel Wisconsin website shows a lady being pulled, water skying…….reaching out and touching the water with one hand….! Holding on with one hand…….

Great shots, Sandra. Pelicans are kind of majestic, and you captured them beautifully.
Thank you very much Kellye, yes I love their looking such a big bird as well. They fly so effortlessly.
Amazing to see such large birds gliding so effortlessly inches above the water; taking full benefit of the ground effect.
