What Kind of Food Is This

What Kind of Food Is This

What Kind of Food Is This, it is one of my favorites. This is in my garden and it produced 3 of them this year. A bumper crop for me. You may not know this, I do not have a green thumb for producing food in a garden. But, I do it anyway and get a thrill out of seeing what might grow every year.

What Kind of Food Is This

I always over plant the garden in the spring, excited to put all sorts of stuff in the earth to grow. Within a couple months little sprouts start popping out of the ground, my husband always ask, ” What is that growing?” Well, after a couple of months I forget what I even planted. So sometimes it is a surprise to me also. πŸ™‚

It is yellow Squash, so we will be having this in a couple of days. My garden produces only one or two things at a time. And that is usually it, my mother used to can jars and jars of garden items. My sister picked up on how to do all that. I was to busy with my horses to stay in the kitchen and learn that stuff.

My Mother used to ask me, ” Do you want to help in the kitchen or go clean the manure in the barn?” Give me the pitch fork, I said; I went straight to the barn. πŸ™‚

  1. Nice. I don’t have a green thumb either but plant anyways. I look a lot at YouTube videos and see what works and what not. But I agree it’s such a thrill when you see your garden blooms.

  2. Beautiful post here friend. Gardening is a beautiful hobby and it is mentioned all across the Bible.

    In Isaiah 58:11 it says
“And the Lord will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail”.

    John 15:5 says:
“I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing”.

Your post made me smile, and sure reminded me of God. It is easy to find God in anything, because he is the author of everything.

    Great post here friend.
May God be with you πŸ™‚

  3. I’ve never grown squash or pumpkins, but the gas station where I photographed the sunflowers had corn next to it and along the ground I saw some blossoms. I wasn’t sure what they were, but judging from the size of the flowers, I’m going to guess pumpkins. Same for your pics. Thinking of going back tomorrow morning and seeing if I guessed right? On the other hand, I should have taken pictures of the flowers then maybe I should wait and do a series of photos next year?

    1. I am not sure what pumpkin flowers look like, I have never been able to grow them. I bet they are similar though. It is so nice to see all the pumpkins everywhere right now. I do love making pumpkin pie. That is the one thing I can make and it turns out pretty good. πŸ™‚

      1. I went to the community gardens at Heritage Park and also stopped at that gas station, all looking for pumpkins, but nothing … his were gone, There were flowers on many of the stalks though, so I should try and get back up there again. At the Botanical Gardens they had some pumpkins as decor.
I walked 7 miles and worked out in the yard for almost four hours – I am not going to make it to Reader again as my eyes are very heavy. πŸ™‚

          1. I know – me too. It was a really good weekend despite having inside and outside chores. I walked seven miles both days and was out like a light when my head hit the pillow. I like that feeling.

    1. Oh you are write, I forgot about zucchini. Yes, squash are those larger ones like acorn squash. Thank you for that, that is why my husband is always asking what it is, I come up with a new name for what ever is growing. 😁

  4. Give me a pitchfork any day too, Sandra! LOL My neighbor gave us a yellow squash this Summer and OH it was so so good. Yours looks mouthwatering as well. I beg to differ with you about your green thumb. I’d say good job!!

    1. Thank you Amy, horses are so amazing. I raised the big draft horses for many years. By my self, they told me I could not handle them when I was younger because I was a woman. I had 5 of them and they are the most gentle horses of all of them I think. It was a wonderful time in my life. Have a great weekend Amy.

      1. I’ve got a love relationship going on right now with an ex-race horse who lives next door to me, Sandra. I’m gaining her trust. The latest thing we are doing is “play”. I chase, she runs and she throws back her head in glee knowing never will I catch her. I end up laughing so hard. One day I was shouting like a madwoman egging her on. To see this magnificent horse trotting in form and to run and then stop on a dime …. poetry in motion. One of the most beautiful sights I’ve ever seen.

        1. That is so awesome Amy, yes, horses love to play. And each one has such a unique personality. They are truly a gift from above. The draft horses are so big, many times I would just stand there with them surrounding me. To beable to be near something that big and powerful, yet they would lower their head to just brush up against you for a loving hand to caress there face. To me, being able.to do that with any animal, horse, cats, dogs, all of them, it is truly being able to see and feel the hand of God to me. His creations. πŸ™‚

          1. I know exactly what you are saying. I so get it. To be next to this “high energy” huge horse and know she would never hurt me and how smart she is as she is very careful of where she places her hooves when I stand next to her, humbles me. I made up a natural fly repellent and as I sprayed her she stood absolutely still. Others in observation when seeing this couldn’t believe it. When horses let us “in” the experience is mind blowing. I have the same type of relationships with my cats. To enter “their” world is such an honor. God’s creations truly are miraculous!

    1. Now that is thinking outside of the box, I could do a lot with one giant pumpkin. I have mastered the pumpkin pie over the years. πŸ™‚

        1. That would be awesome to climb up to where the eagles fly. I would be up there every day. I am a day dreamer, it doesn’t take much for my imagination to fly. Wonderful thought, πŸ™‚

            1. 😁 I am guessing you are right, no Turkey. An Eagle want to be. When I was younger I dreamt that I could fly quite often. It was my way of escaping reality. Birds and horses, they are the most amazing animals to me, the top two on my list .😊

            2. Yesterday I only looked at the pictures, I just read up on some of the history this morning. Very interesting, I do not know anything about this at all. I have only heard the names here and there.

  5. Thanks Sandra. Made me laugh. A Surprise Garden and β€œRunning To Horses.” It’s good you discovered who you are and walked within it so early and were allowed to choose. I’m sure your horses appreciated it, knowing you wanted to be with them. Amazing soulful creatures and not a few deep thinkers. There are not many things that represent freedom in nature so well as a large galloping band of wild mustangs running free. Have a great weekend.

    1. Thank you very much RJ, yes horses are so amazing. I was fortunate enough to be around them most of my life. My path in life took a different road as I got older. But I will always have a love for horses. A wonderful weekend to you also.

  6. I like squash now. Not so much in my younger days, but unfortunately we didn’t have a horse barn or manure to pitch. I think I missed out.

  7. Love the garden they remind me of when I grew tomatoes and Cucumbers. They came in at about the same time and I would pick one of each and go in and make a sandwich. Garden to mouth in five minutes
BTW I shovel a whole different kind of s***

    Keep Laughing

    1. Lol, that is the best having it right out of the garden. Better than store bought. πŸ™‚ I am sure my shoveling was way more fun

  8. β™‘ YOU!!! Clearly have an Awesome Relationship with Mother Nature; so Beautiful

    …β™‘β™‘β™‘…

  9. Yellow squashes are gr8 – easy to sow, easy to grow, easy to rip not like cucumbers πŸ˜‰ For us they’re multifunctial base to do soups, pancakes, to grill with spices or to fry breaded. Blessings from Poland.

    1. πŸ™‚ Actually all those little things that look like spikes are what they call fine hair, or botanically called trichomes. A lot of plants have them, they can protect the plants from frost or dehydration and they help keep the bugs away. Most plants have them, we just don’t see them unless you get really close. πŸ™‚ Have a great weekend Jo.
