What a Conundrum Amidst

What a Conundrum Amidst , trickery I tell you. Well, I have been watching these two birds for a couple of weeks now. Thinking they were purple martins, but because of a fellow blogger who commented on my last update about these birds, I have been tricked by these little Tree Swallows. He mentioned that they looked like Tree Swallows, so I started to investigate and by golly they are.

They fly like a purple martin and they have pointy wings like one. Their blueish, purplish sheen made me think they were purple martins. But you can see the difference below in the two birds. Now they both eat lots of bugs and are fun to watch fly. But, Purple Martins live in colonies and Tree Swallows like to be alone, just the one pair.

And the Tree Swallows like to have the whole house to them selves and will chase off any other birds. I noticed this week, that the female was picking up nesting material and putting it in every apartment in this house. I thought to my self, ” How nice of her to furnish the other apartments for other birds, or she was just confused which one she wanted”.

Well, I have read about how to discourage them from taking up resident here, I will be lowering the house and taking their nest out so that maybe they go find a tree to nest in. Being they are called Tree Swallows. 🙂

At the end of the day, I learned about a new bird I have never seen before and a rainbow came out in the evening as I sat on my porch watching nature in my back yard. Have a great weekend.

  1. Another beautiful rainbow you have captured Sandra. I’m so far behind, by now the swallows have kids that might be ready to fledge!

    1. That is funny, well, I have not noticed any kids yet. So you are good. No worries, sometimes life is busy and you need to just take time for your self.

      1. Hopefully they have some kids to take pictures of. I’ve not returned to Reader since Sunday – we had some rumbling weather late afternoon/early evening. I was unscathed but we had about 10,000 people lose power this afternoon here in Wayne County. A few more stormy afternoons and Sunday will be dry and moderate heat (yay for that).

  2. Interesting that tree swallows won’t share the communal site, given how cooperative they are in other ways. Next year, if you want to deter tree swallow nests, try leaving the PM house doors closed until purple martins show up to claim property rights. Or so I’ve read. That said, tree swallows are beautiful, feisty birds and I guarantee you would enjoy watching them if you put up a couple bluebird-type nest boxes for them. Their numbers are declining and they need the help.
    Spectacular rainbow!

    1. Thank you Martha, yes I was reading about that. We did put up another wooden house farther away from these and they have been checking them out. They do fly around just like PM and seem very friendly. They swoop down and gather nesting material right next to me. They are very pretty birds. We have two more wooden single homes to put up this week and that might help them to go to one of those. 🙂

    1. These are the first I have seen in a long time also Francine, a wonderful weekend to you as well. 😊

  3. Looks like these guys want the place for themselves Sandra and they believe occupation is 9/10ths of the law. Lovely captures all round and the rainbow carries great promise. Enjoy your weekend also 🙂

  4. How awesome, I am also learning more about the behaviour of some Malachite Sunbirds I have started feeding some syrup that I got from the wild bird pet shop. How they also do not like to share, yes, they put up quite a noisy resistance to other birds and even their own kind who will get to the feeding bottle first.
    Thanks for sharing.

    1. Yes, it is the same with the hummingbirds. I have 3 feeders and I see 4 birds and they are always chasing each other away from the feeders. 😊
