Unusual Nesting Material
Unusual Nesting Material, we were driving down the backroads in Idaho when I notice this blob of stuff on top of a electric poll. So we pulled over and I had to zoom in with my camera and that is when I saw the Osprey Birds head amongst the sticks and realized it is a nest.
Birds have adapted to the loss of habitat for their nest and are now fortifying their construction with man made material. It is not a pretty nest but I imaging it is a bit stronger with all that twine holding the twigs together.
We stopped at this lake and camped for a week here on the snake river in the lower corner of Idaho last winter.

Pretty amazing building it up there isn’t it? I was amazed when I saw the Ospreys built their nest in the fire station siren – what were they thinking?
That would be bad at a siren. π
Knock a few years off their lives every time it went off!
That’s one smart bird .. it will not be long before they learn about hammers and nails hehehe.
Lol, they will have little condos up there then.
I beg to differ. That nest is colorful and beautiful, twine streaming in the breeze. Sorry their habitat is demolished, but they are adapting in a very eye-catching way. Bully for them!
That is true. It probably makes the nest stronger. They are very smart birds.
Love the ospreys. π€£ππ
Me to, they are so cool looking.

Weβve had an osprey nest on the top of a utility pole, here in Old Saybrook, Connecticut, on Route 1 for a few years. Itβs highly trafficked but the osprey doesnβt seem to mind.
They must like wide open spaces for their nest instead of in a tree. I have seen a few man made nest for them here and there and they use those also.
I bet it made for a softer nest too!
I bet so π
Once, I found a house sparrow nest that had all the expected natural materials but was laced with cigarette filters. I use it as a prop for a quality lesson I gave to production workers who probably contributed the filters to the nest. The lesson was that sometimes they produced product that they felt was good enough, sort of to specification, though not precisely what the specification called for, just like the nest serve its purpose, yet incorporated our waste in i, possibly harmful to the nestlings. The lesson fell on deaf ears! Too subtle, I guess, or taken as a complaint about sloppy workmanship instead as a guide to quality thinking.
That is a great way to put it. Yes some people don’t understand your concept at all. A lot of people I come across living in cities don’t even hear the birds anymore so they don’t think of them.
Or see stars at night. That is sad!
Yes it is.
Good.
Thank you very much Peter.
Beautiful photos, great find with that nest way up there. β€οΈ
Thank you very much John, yes I missed it going one way and saw it on the way back.
You are welcome. βΊοΈ
Birds have found that building nests on electrical or electronic posts provides them with nice warmth in the winter
They do have a pretty good view from all around the nest. π
A bird’s fortress ! πππππ
Yes. High above everything, best vantage point π
A great example of what we all leave behind in nature….
It really is. Thank you Rudi π
Iβve camped on the Snake River many times in WA & ID! Never been much further than Moscow though. N. ID is beautiful country and Iβve owned property in multiple places as well as E. WA. I love when you share photos that Iβm like βhey I know that area!β
That is so cool to hear when others have been places we have been to as well. Idaho and Oregon are beautiful states. I was surprised at all the irrigation around there which made for some beautiful lush green pastures on the farms.
