Two New Birds

Two New Birds – First the Great Crested Flycatcher. I love all the yellow on its belly, it blends so well with the brown wings. Such a pretty bird.

Great Crested Flycatchers are large flycatchers with fairly long and lean proportions. Like many flycatchers they have a powerful build with broad shoulders and a large head. Despite its name, this bird’s crest is not especially prominent. The bill is fairly wide at the base and straight; the tail is fairly long.

I have finally seen the Red Headed Woodpecker. I had seen one in a movie I think and figured they must be rare and that I probably would never see one.

Guess what, this one I spotted in Illinois. I was so surprised. It was very far away and did not let me get to close to take a good photo. Such striking bold colors, add this to the life list.

  1. Where are you located, Sandra? I’m in Southeast Texas and have never seen a Great Crested Flycatcher, but Red-Headed Woodpeckers are common. Your flycatcher picture is magnificent! I just wanted to reach out and gently pat that regal-looking bird on it’s fluffy crest.

    1. Hello Kim. I photographed that flycatcher on the gulf coast of Alabama, it was a surprise to find for sure. Thank you 😊

  2. You’re constantly adding to your list Sandra. The Flycatcher was regal looking in that pose! What a beautiful bird you captured. I’ve never seen a Red-Headed Woodpecker … yet.

  3. First encounters of a new species are special moments indeed! Congratulations!

These are two of our favorites. Although the Red-headed Woodpecker has had problems adjusting to habitat loss there is some recent hope that populations may be stabilizing. Fingers crossed.

    Terrific photographs!

    1. Thank you very much, I was not expecting to see the red headed woodpecker at all. Especially in Illinois. There were two of them at this park, it was so exciting to try and photograph them.

  4. Great catches! (no pun intended with the Flycatcher) I’ve been lucky to catch both in my back yard (moderate woods) in IL.

    1. How fun to see the red headed woodpecker in your yard. I really thought they were only out west somewhere. I did not think they really existed. 🙂

      1. I’ve only ever seen it a few times, and have one crummy photo of one hanging out on a tree. I’ve seen Pileated woodpeckers more often as a comparison.

    1. I was so surprised to see the Redheaded woodpecker. I really thought it was only in far away places where I might never see one.

  5. Congrats on your lifer Sandra, it is especially a thrill when they are rare birds, or elusive ones. Such great contrasting colors not hard to detect.
