Tug Boats and Barges

Tug Boats and Barges

Tug Boats and Barges on the Ohio River, we were camping by the Ohio river as we are heading south again, one of our favorite places in Metropolis Illinois.

The tug boats are still running on this river in November where as I heard that the mighty Mississippi river is drying up in some places farther south where the barges are sitting still because there is not enough water to go down stream.

This barge here is loaded with coal and moves down every morning at sunrise.

  1. I see that pretty bridge in the background as well. We see a lot of tugs and barges on the Detroit River. Last year I was fascinated to watch the tugboat pulling a huge barge with a crane for a dredging and repair operation near Elizabeth Park. The precision that these barges are moved with a tugboat that is so much smaller is just remarkable to me.

    1. It really is Linda, and the hours the people work on these things, going up and down the river all day. Quite the job.

      1. I was very impressed … they work hard and then have the lay-up season when the water is frozen, January to the beginning of April. They need it with the hours they work.

  4. It reminds me of my childhood days in Cincinnati and seeing the barges and tugs when we would go to the Cincinnati Airport which was actually across the Ohio River in Kentucky.
