They’re Our Biggest Waterfowl
They’re Our Biggest Waterfowl – Trumpeter Swans demand superlatives: they’re our biggest native waterfowl, stretching to 6 feet in length and weighing more than 25 pounds – almost twice as massive as a Tundra Swan.
Despite their size, this once-endangered, now recovering species is as elegant as any swan, with a graceful neck and snowy-white plumage. They breed on wetlands in remote Alaska, Canada, and the northwestern U.S., and winter on ice-free coastal and inland waters.
They almost appear to be smiling with that little touch of orange in the corner of their bill.
There is a swan behind this branch, my camera changed its focus on the mossy covered branch instead. But I find moss to be so artistic in its own way.

Lovely photos!
Thank you very much 😊
Those swans are huge … just seeing that huge neck. Yet so graceful. I had no idea they weighed that much. It does look like it is smiling with the touch of orange.
I thought so to, it appears to curve up just a little to make it look like a smile
Yes, you caught that little dab of color that does that.
biggest by weight not size. Do you know who is the largest by size?
Could it be the Eagle or the Albatross? I heard the Albatross is a huge bird.
I had to Goggle to confirm and yes I was right, the California Condor. 10.5 foot wing span
Wow, I just looked it up. Another impressive bird. I would loved to see that one also.
yes,I’ve never seen these guys before. An eagle has 7 foot wingspans and the Alaskan eagles reach up to 8 feet but these guys are 2 1/2 feet larger then them!
The Swans are the marvelous waterfowls. Your images are beautiful
Thank you very much 🙂
smile
😊always
Just watched a BBC Earth documentary on birds and it caught some excellent flight footage of swans. I highly recommend the DVD.
Thank you I will look it up. 🙂
They really are magnificent birds, and your photos are just so beautiful. I loved the « smile »…
Thanks, Sandra, Have a great day.
Thank you Francine, you to 🙂
For me it’s one of the most elegant birds we know.
Yes, very true 🙂
Beautiful. I always love to see the swans (mute swans in our case) on our local lake in the UK.
Yes, me to. I have never seen a mute swan. They are similar though. 😊
They are similar, but with an orange beak. Here’s one of mine: https://hairy1travels.com/2018/11/13/swan-on-the-lake/
Wonderful photo you took as well. Such an elegant bird. 🙂
Thanks.
Everytime I see a swan, i remember how it hugs ❤️❤️
Yes, beautiful 😊
There is a lot written about it in the Bible as well. There are some famous stories about the swans in Hinduism as well.
They are pure beauty and so graceful when you see them together. Amazing birds. 😊
ya good luck
Beautiful Sandra!!! I love swans. 💖💛
Me to, and I never see more than one pair. So it is a treat to be able to photograph them.😊
What a magnificent creature and what a size! Really beautiful, Sandra.
Thank you Don, they are amazing birds. I found this one pair not to far from me so I will be visiting them when I can.
The branch picture was unexpected, but I can see the shape of the swan behind it… like a ghost. 🙂
Yes, I thought I could focus past the branch but the camera said no. 😊
IT’S A YUGE, BEAUTIFUL SWAN! AND WE’RE GONNA MAKE CANADA PAY FOR THEM!
