The Twin Barns at Nisqually
The Twin Barns at Nisqually, They were built in 1932 and used as dairy barns. Later, the tidelands that the farm had been built upon were returned to an estuarial state and became the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge in 1974.
The barns were used as an environmental education center, but were damaged in the 6.8 magnitude 2001 Nisqually Earthquake and have been closed since then. In December 2015, the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge was resdesignated the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge to honor the Nisqually Tribe Leader Billy Frank Jr.
These are probably two of the largest barns I have ever seen. I can just imagine how many bales of hay fit in the lofts of both of these.

You’re right Sandra – those are very high barns … lots of hay could be stored dry and safe from the elements up there back in the day.
I do like the old barns. They just look nice and are functional.
Yes, they are Sandra. I saw an old barn last Summer and should have pulled off to the side of the road to take a photo from the car. I am going to try and find it this Summer. It was a barn, but what was unusual was that it had an antique sign on the side, which intrigued me.

I grew up throwing hay bales. Their size makes my muscles ache just looking at them. We had a small barn in comparison and talked my little brother off the peak from doing the Mary Poppins thing with an umbrella. We convinced him to try the chicken coop first. I wish we had video back then….that’s still an ouch memory.
I grew up doing the same Gary, throwing square bales and stacking them in the loft of my horse barn. Nothing like the smell of hay in a loft when you open the doors. I always liked having the door on the loft open and just sit there looking out over the farm. 🙂
