The Road Runner
The Road Runner – What an appropriate name for this bird. I mostly saw it running down the side of a road when we were out west.
I am posting this because someone the other day was asking if I had a photo of a road runner. Which I do, so I thought I would share it here. During the breeding season you will see a bright blue and orange patch behind the eyes.
I photographed this one when we were in Texas.

Gorgeous.
Meep meep!
They are unique looking and look at what long strides it was taking!
Thanks Sandra. Great pictures.
I remember once working in the oil field when I had an interesting roadrunner experience out in the wilds of west Texas. I was on a well-deserved break sitting in my truck parked at a tank battery and pump jack trying to get a short nap (very long hours, hard work). It was a hot afternoon. I had my windows open. On a nearby electric pole a bird had a nest. Pretty sure it was a mockingbird if memory serves. They are very territorial and aggressive.
I had managed to get a few winks and then was suddenly awakened knowing something had jumped on my crossed knee. I quickly opened my eyes and there before me making his acquaintance was an agitated roadrunner who had temporarily found some relief. He had flown in my open driver side window and took up his perch completely unconcerned about me or what I was. I am guessing this has never happened to anyone else in the history of the world. He just stood there before me in profile less than two feet away looking out my passenger window. First time I ever got such a close up view. The little guy had apparently jumped into my cab escaping the mockingbird who saw him as a threat. I managed to softly direct him out the passenger window (he was reluctant to go) but not before taking a short video on my phone to document the event.
As soon as he flew out and landed on the ground on the other side of my truck the other bird came right after him again and chased him off with repeated dive bombings. I think I may have closed my windows most of the way after thatβ¦
What a wonderful experience, and quite the surprise I can imagine. That is where I saw this guy, at a town called Marathon north of Big Bend National Park, they had a pair living at the campground there.
I always enjoy your photography.
