The Pileated Woodpecker
The Pileated Woodpecker is one of the biggest, most striking forest birds on the continent. Itβs nearly the size of a crow, black with bold white stripes down the neck and a flaming-red crest.
Look (and listen) for Pileated Woodpeckers whacking at dead trees and fallen logs in search of their main prey, carpenter ants, leaving unique rectangular holes in the wood. The nest holes these birds make offer crucial shelter to many species including swifts, owls, ducks, bats, and pine martens.
I found this one in Montana π

I think he is the woodpecker that the cartoon “Woody the Woodpecker” is named for. I’ve never been lucky enough to see (or hear) one. π
I think so also Linda. They are such a pretty bird.
Love watching these beautiful birds. There are two that I follow near my home In Louisiana
Yes, I have two here also. I usually hear them more then see them. They stay hidden so well.

Most welcome π
I love hearing woodpeckers peck at the wood in search of food. When I have a camera on hand I try to take picture but the dang birds are too quick or I’m just too slow. You are amazing at capturing the them! Thank you for sharing.
I know what you mean. I miss a lot of shots as well. Always fun trying though. π
I love it when I catch one of these guys in action.

Beautiful bird. We don’t have woodpeckers where we live unless we catch one or two during migration. They are fascinating creatures. Thanks for sharing!
You are very welcome Kellye. π
Ah, the Woody Woodpecker of the real world. My favorite Woodpecker by far and one we have the joy of watching fright from our porch. You definitely know when they are around, if not by their loud maniacal call, their hammering sound will travel an entire forest. It is a shame we probably lost the Ivory-Billed variety
I do enjoy seeing these around our place as well. The two at our house are more skittish, this one was low to the ground and I was able to walk close to it.
Every time I see him I am in awe
Me to, π
A beautful woodpecker, we have a similar in our woods here.
They are so cool looking and pretty fast fliers.

Thank you very much Francine π
I bet this bird doesn’t realize how many animals it helps with its actions
That’s great Altcoin, but I really don’t think the woodpecker and the animals it is helping will benefit from your help π€ͺπ
Isn’t it something, now I look for the rectangle shape holes in trees to see what might be living in them.
Boy Sandra, the spam keeps popping through your blog to reply to my comment
I see that, I delete them as they show up. Spam is like the junk mail I get at the post office, it just keeps showing up. π
A beautiful and striking bird in appearance Sandra, lovely pics.
Nice ππΎ
