The Pileated Woodpecker

The Pileated Woodpecker

The Pileated Woodpecker is one of the biggest, most striking forest birds on the continent. It’s nearly the size of a crow, black with bold white stripes down the neck and a flaming-red crest.

Look (and listen) for Pileated Woodpeckers whacking at dead trees and fallen logs in search of their main prey, carpenter ants, leaving unique rectangular holes in the wood. The nest holes these birds make offer crucial shelter to many species including swifts, owls, ducks, bats, and pine martens.

I found this one in Montana πŸ™‚

  1. I think he is the woodpecker that the cartoon “Woody the Woodpecker” is named for. I’ve never been lucky enough to see (or hear) one. πŸ™‚

  2. I love hearing woodpeckers peck at the wood in search of food. When I have a camera on hand I try to take picture but the dang birds are too quick or I’m just too slow. You are amazing at capturing the them! Thank you for sharing.

  3. Ah, the Woody Woodpecker of the real world. My favorite Woodpecker by far and one we have the joy of watching fright from our porch. You definitely know when they are around, if not by their loud maniacal call, their hammering sound will travel an entire forest. It is a shame we probably lost the Ivory-Billed variety

    1. I do enjoy seeing these around our place as well. The two at our house are more skittish, this one was low to the ground and I was able to walk close to it.

    1. That’s great Altcoin, but I really don’t think the woodpecker and the animals it is helping will benefit from your help πŸ€ͺπŸ˜†

    2. Isn’t it something, now I look for the rectangle shape holes in trees to see what might be living in them.

      1. I see that, I delete them as they show up. Spam is like the junk mail I get at the post office, it just keeps showing up. 😊
