The Osprey in Flight

The Osprey in Flight

The Osprey in Flight, these photos were taken next to the ocean as we walked along the beach. This gorgrous osprey was doing a little fishing. They dive into the water just like the brown pelicans to catch their fish. I did not see them hit the water, but I am thinking they catch their fish with their claws instead. The last photo shows their amazing claws.

  1. I love the details in the Osprey’s feathers we are able to see in your pictures. Watching the Osprey fish is one of the things my Dad and I enjoy doing when sitting on the beach. It’s hard not to get swept into the hunt and give a cheer when they emerge from the water with a fish in tow. Their eyesight never ceases to amaze me.

    1. Yes Beth, this is my first time seeing an Osprey, they are quite magnificant birds. The talons on them rivel to that of an Eagle. Amazing how they hover over the water and then dive down.

  2. Those are impressive claws – a fish doesn’t stand a chance! There was a video by a Florida photographer a few years ago and he saw an osprey swoop down and grab a huge fish, but it was too big for the osprey to carry and it weighed him down. Bet the osprey was mad!

  3. Amazing, up-close photos! There is an osprey that has a nest on a cliff and flies over my favorite beach frequently (Pacific side!), but I cannot seem to get clear photos up close. She’s pretty fast! Thanks for sharing your beautiful photos. 😎

    1. You are very welcome, yes they are very fast, this one was hoverig over the water doing some fishing so we had a chance to get a few clear shots. 🙂

  4. Fabulous captures, Sandra! Yes, Osprey fish with their feet—diving feet first into the water, often completely submerging, then having to really work it to get airborne. It’s quite a thing to see and I hope you get some more opportunities.

    1. Thank you Ellen, I hope we get to see that also. We were quite a ways back from the edge of the water where it was fishing, so there was a sand ridge in front of him as he hit the water. We did not want to move any closer because he may have moved off. 🙂

    1. I was wondering that, we were farther back on the beach so when they dove in we could not see how they were catching the fish and did not want to move any closer or it might have left.

      1. We used to live near the Potomac River and vacationed over Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends near the Chesapeake Bay so we had several opportunities to see Ospreys. Did you know that the male makes the nest and the female will not lay eggs that year if she does not like the nest?

        1. No I had not heard that. Amazing really, In bird world most all the males have to do their best to impress the females. 😊

    1. Thank you very much, we have been walking all over on the Gulf coast beaches, some days there are lots of birds and the next day we see nothing. 🙂

  5. Love it! ❤️ I’m amazed at how clear the first picture is. I can see the expression in the osprey’s eyes.

    1. Yes, it is fun to be able to photograph a bird and see the eyes like this. It was hovering above for quite awhile looking for fish below. So it is easier to focus on it when they are somewhat still in the air.

        1. Well, it is something how certain images and colors can remind people of events like that. One doesn’t see just a dark blue sky very often.
