The Limpkin

The Limpkin

We made it to the nature preserve with quiet anticipation, hoping to spend the morning surrounded by the kind of life that always draws us in.

But this time… it was different.

To my disappointment, we saw just one bird and one alligator. That was it. The stillness felt heavier than peaceful, like something was missing.

The Limpkin – this is a new bird to my life list. We had finally made it down to one of the nature walks south of New Orleans and came across this bird.

They eat apple snails, which we found some of the left over shells along the walk.

We stopped to talk with a few locals who were also at the park, and they helped fill in the story. They told us that many of the preserves in this area are currently closed for repairs. Funding had been set aside years ago to refurbish them, but only recently has the work actually begun. The one we were standing in just happened to be the only one open at the time.

It made sense.

And honestly, we appreciated them taking the time to share that with us. Sometimes it’s those small conversations with strangers that shape the day more than anything else.

So we made a simple decision—we turned back.

There was no disappointment in it anymore. No need to chase something that wasn’t there.

Because the truth is… we already had exactly what we came for.

Back at our campground, the Black-bellied Whistling Duck were waiting. Dozens of them. Bright, beautiful, full of life—right there, close enough to truly enjoy. No crowds. No searching. Just the quiet moments we’re always drawn to.

And we were good with that.

Sometimes the best experiences aren’t found by going farther… but by recognizing what’s already been given to you.
