The Beautiful Brown Pelicans
The Beautiful Brown Pelicans
I am back in my favorite place, where I can see the Brown Pelicans everyday. Those of you who have seen my blog post from way back know that I have photographed a lot of the Great White Pelicans and I photographed them in Iowa of all places. But the brown pelicans are only found down south on the ocean waters.
The biggest difference between the two types of Pelicans is the color of course and then their size. The White pelicans have a wing span of 108″ and the Brown pelicans have a 78 inch wing span. I will show the difference on tomorrow’s post.

Thank you π
It will be interesting to see the difference in size … I, as well as others, probably figured they had similar characteristics, just a different color. Interesting they have a white head and the rest of the plumage is brown.
you love pelicans and your images are beautiful.
Yes, there is just something about them. Probably because I don’t get to see them all the time and that they are just so different and unique. π
You are blessed to have 2 kinds of Pelican Donna, we only have our white Australian Pelican, which is more pied as it does have black on it feathers. The browns are very interesting and appear to have some variation, or are the latter photos of younger ones ?
Thank you, yes there is a variation in the colors on the browns. Some necks are a little white and I noticed some of the brown pelicans farther south are more of a gold colored brown.
Oh my! Their beaks are so long. Theyβre beautiful quite alright. Love the pattern of the feathers.
Yes, they are such a cool looking bird. I will try and get some videos of them as well and put those on one day.π
I love the pelicans. There is a wonderful poem about them by Ogden Nash. One part says “their beak can hold more than their bellican. In Savannah Ga where I used to live we had the mostly white one.
Yes, I have heard that song and it seems to be true. I do like photographing both, the white ones are so pretty.
Do your brown pelicans fly along the break line? Our Pacific pelicans do
I love to watch them doing that.
These guys seem to fly pretty much everywhere, I hope to get some video of them diving into the ocean also.
Iβve never seen a brown pelicanβ¦ wonderful photos!
Thank you, they are quite unique. π
Very nice captures, Sandra! They are so prehistoric looking, yet elegant, and fun to watch.
Yes, such a strange looking bird, but like you said elegant at the same time.
Nicely done ππ
Thank you Ted, it is good to see them again.

Yes, they are so unique looking both breeds. I think there are 6 or more typed of Pelicans, but the others are in different countries.
You are so smart Wow π€£ππ€£
ππ you can only see the two kinds here on this blog. I don’t like flying, so I will leave that up to the birds. π
Yes Flying is for the birds ππ€£π
Such beautiful birds. I suppose the nearest we have to them would be the heron ?
Gwen.
Hello Gwen, yes heron are gorgeous birds as well.
Congratulations Sandra for these top shots !
Thank you Rudi, I love photographing this birds and they sit still pretty well in the middle of the day when they are not fishing. You can always find them sitting on a pole somewhere.
One of them looks scruffy, but I guess it’s only an impression. π They are majestic birds while flying and funny while perched on a log. π
Yes, they do get pretty scruffy looking they are always diving into the water at feeding time. I will try and get a video of that.
Yes! They are back, Sandra! Now, I forgot about the chapter numbering. Thank you for these great photos!
Yes, it is so nice to see the brown pelicans again. They are not as big as the white ones but still pretty cool looking. π thank you Kent.
