The Osprey in Flight, these photos were taken next to the ocean as we walked along the beach. This gorgrous osprey was doing a little fishing. They dive into the water just like the brown pelicans to catch their fish. I did not see them hit the water, but I am thinking they catch their fish with their claws instead. The last photo shows their amazing claws.
Who Makes the Best Splash, starting with this long necked bird. Can you guess which bird he is? He is at the bottom of the post with the catch of the day.
Funny thing is, the smaller bird above makes a big splash, this medium size bird below, (White Pelican), makes a beautiful, artistic head dive into the water.
Now, I am not positive what bird disappeared into the water on this photo below, I believe it was a diving duck. 🙂
But when you really want a big splash, just hang out with a swan during bath time.
The first photo above is the Blue Heron and he did get a nice fish after all his efforts dunking his head into the water.
A Bird Family Called Ardeidae, how to pronounce this word. Ar·de·i·dae | \ ärˈdēəˌdē. I have been photographing these two species of birds for years, the Great Egrets and Blue Herons. When I saw this photo below, I realized how similar these two birds are. Come to find out they are in the same family also.
Definition of Ardeidae
A family of long-legged and long-necked migratory wading birds comprising the herons and bitterns.
In the family Ardeidae, there are 64 different species which have been identified and are recognized. Some of these species are called bitterns or egrets in place of herons due to the differences in their appearance.
Herons and egrets are both, freshwater, coastal birds. But these photos were taken here in the mid west. And this was the first year I saw the White Egrets here on the Mississippi river. So it was a surprise and so much fun to photograph them.
I have a handful of photos left to post of these two beautiful birds. But I hope to see more of them again next year.
Sunrise at the River, the weather is so nice here this week. I have been busy getting out of the house early to see what I can find down by the river in the early morning light. So I got there as the sun was coming up and I was watching the birds in front of me.
I turned to look behind me and the sun was casting an orange glow everywhere as it was coming up over the horizon, making for a wonderful silhouette of the trees.
This low light is what cast such a warm golden color across the water. As many of you may know, that is why it is my favorite time of day for photography. This blue herons wings just grazed the water in this shot.
It is still a very low light out here, which is causing some noise in the photo, that gives it a bit of a grainy look. But I still enjoyed the reflection of this tall Blue heron wading in the river.
And the gulls are back also, they have been gone for a while and this morning they were flocking in from the east as the sun was rising.
