Good Thing It is Summer or his tongue would stick to the metal. Be honest, who did that when you were younger. Had your tongue get stuck to a metal pole. I did, on the playground during recess. They dared me and I went ahead and tried it. But I barely touched it, I was only stuck for a few seconds. I never forgot it, good thing we get a little wiser as we get older.
Little Round Balls of Feathers, with their little yellow legs and knobby knees. This was quite the sight as I walked along the river, with the sun warming everything around me. Even these birds taking a nap, makes them look like they lost their heads.
My thought is, if I rolled a bowling ball out there, they would all just fall over.
Pileated Woodpecker, A big dashing bird with a flaming crest, the largest woodpecker in North America. I finally got a photo of this beautiful bird today. I have been trying to get one for years. For such a large bird, they move pretty fast through the trees.
Excavating deep into rotten wood to get at the nests of carpenter ants, the Pileated leaves characteristic rectangular holes in dead trees. This species became rare in eastern North America with clearing of forests in centuries past, but has gradually increased in numbers again since about the beginning of the 20th century.
Who Makes the Best Splash, starting with this long necked bird. Can you guess which bird he is? He is at the bottom of the post with the catch of the day.
Funny thing is, the smaller bird above makes a big splash, this medium size bird below, (White Pelican), makes a beautiful, artistic head dive into the water.
Now, I am not positive what bird disappeared into the water on this photo below, I believe it was a diving duck. 🙂
But when you really want a big splash, just hang out with a swan during bath time.
The first photo above is the Blue Heron and he did get a nice fish after all his efforts dunking his head into the water.
There are 87 Different Species of Kingfisher’s in the world and this one can fly about 36 miles per hour. Luckily I caught this one sitting down for a minute. And this is the first one I have ever seen. What a surprise to see it yesterday as we were out for a drive. This one is the Belted Kingfisher.
The Belted Kingfisher is one of the few bird species in which the female is more brightly colored than the male.
Now this is a new bird to me also, but with the help of other bloggers I discovered that it is a female Grosbeak, and with this species the male is way more colorful than the female.
Male Rose Breasted Grosbeak
I just put a photo of the Colorful Blue Jay in to fill the page. 🙂
Birds are Designed for Flight, The combination of light weight, strength and shape, as well as precision control, is largely responsible for giving birds their special ability for sustained flight.
Every part gives maximum power with a minimum of weight. The heavier the animal, the bigger its wings need to be. The bigger the wings, the more muscle is needed to move them. (video below)
One of my favorite things to try and photograph are birds in flight, just as their wings touch the water.
And of course, my favorite bird being the Bald Eagle. I do not have one of his wings touching the water, Yet. 🙂 But his tail feathers are almost touching in this photograph.
My second favorite, the American White Pelican. They are all gone now in my area for the winter. I look forward to spring time when they return, but for now the Eagles will be coming back here soon. And I always look forward to that. There is something for every season under the sun.
I like this photo below, he looks like he is waving good by for the year.
This video shows the strength of the pelicans wings as I put it into slow motion when it is gliding over water. You can see his wings just graze the water. That is beauty in motion to me.
