Standing Bear

Standing Bear

Standing Bear – They sure look strange when standing up. This black bear is actually a smaller one. Standing he is shorter then 6ft. Compared to the pole I measured behind him.

This bear is about 80 yards from my house. I was standing next to the backdoor of our cabin as I photographed him. Being very quiet to not get its attention. Plus being right by the door incase I have to go back in.

I also use a 600 mm lens so I can get a closer photo.

  1. Wow Sandra that is scary having such a large wild animal so close to your house. Yes they do look strange standing with their tight small butt. Some great shots of him.

    1. Thank you very much ๐Ÿ™‚ There are suppose to be moose around here as well, but I have never seen one of those.

  2. Wow – you were so close and good thing you could make a hasty exit if needed. Funny pictures of the bear – standing up, looks like a human in a bear suit. ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Thanks Sandra. These are great. Bears certainly do look weird standing up sometimes. Animals often engage in unexpected behavior. I remember when I was a young man deer hunting. My Dad trained me very well and taught me a lot. I had just started hunting on my own in tree stands and one late afternoon I saw something that kind of shocked me because I had never seen it before. While looking for that big buck I was patiently watching several does eating deer corn doing the usual. All of a sudden two big does rose up on their hind legs and started fighting each other with their front legs. Deer boxing. It was pretty cool.

    1. That sounds so cool, I have heard that they can do that. I have a short video of a doe standing up to reach my bird feeder, she stood for a long time. So strange to see. Those front hoofs can be wicked I bet.

    1. Thank you Kellye, I do have a very long telephoto lens, so that helps a lot to not get close to them ๐Ÿ˜‰

  4. If you don’t want the excitement of bear visits you might try hot sauce on the bird seed. The zoo here uses the hot sauce to discourage rodents around the bird feeders. Most mammals do not like hot sauce. And the birds do not mind it. Then again you might have angry bears instead of angry birds. Great picture… if one likes fuzzy beasts at the bird feeder !

  5. At first glance I thought it was a guy in a bear suit. I think deer are hard enough on my bird feeders, but to have a bear there also . . .

    1. Yes, they just look weird standing up. I just raised my bird feeders even higher so the deer can’t eat all the food. Even if she stands up she can’t reach it now.

      1. I think mine are safe from most deer, unless they stand on their hind legs, which has happened. No bears here so OK there.

  6. And here I thought I’d seen everything when a woodpecker got a sip from our hummingbird feeder …. not even close to your experience!

  7. I just remembered the recent news in China about a sun bear that was mistaken for a mascot because of its upright stance, similar to the bear in this picture. Bears are fascinating creatures. ๐Ÿงธ๐Ÿ˜

  8. Amazing. Very human-like stance.

  9. Last time I saw a standing bear was during the Christmas traditions in Romania, of course a disguised one.

    Great shots, Sandra! ๐Ÿ˜Œ
