SS United States – you may have heard about this old ship that was towed to Mobile Alabama. We were fortunate enough to be in an area where we got to see this historic old ship.
It says that it is bigger than the Titanic, and was quite the ship back in the day. But it is going to be sunk over by Destin Florida somewhere for a reef. It has to be cleaned first. They will be doing the cleaning in Mobile Al for about 6 to 9 months.
While I was taking these photos, a gentleman came up to us and said they flew here from Ireland just to see this ship.

Have a great weekend.

We drove through Mobile AL on our March road trip this year, and got a glimpse of her (phone photo only) in the maintenance berth. I think it’s neat that she will become a grand reef, and that divers will have the opportunity to explore her, with the fish, down below.
It was quite something to see it getting towed into the bay. A site it must have been when it was new as well. π
That’s a big ship – was the gentleman from Ireland a passenger on her at one time?
I asked him that and he said no, but knew of someone that was on it.
Okay, I see – you should have mentioned your blog so that person could see the pictures. I enjoyed seeing them again after reading the story.
Have a great weekend
Thank you, you also π
It’s a shame none of our billionaires claimed it for a prize. It would have only cost a pittance (compared to their stated wealth) to refit her. At least then the largest private yacht debate would be over.
Yes, for something that big, sinking it seems like a waist.
Cool!!
The Queen Mary is perma-docked a few miles from me. Carnival Cruises moved in next door (in the Spruce Goose dome) and it’s crazy to see the size of modern ships compared to the QM!!
Yes, even this ship looks small when up against a cruise ship.

Wow that is one huge stately ship Sandra, it seems a shame to sink it, surely there are better uses for it’s future
