Rare Find of the Reddish Egret

Rare Find of the Reddish Egret

Rare Find of the Reddish Egret, We happened across a new bird to add to my list last week, as we walked along the shoreline looking for a different bird at the time. I had no idea what this bird was, but believed it to be in the Heron family.

When I got back home I looked it up right away to find that it is a non breeding Reddish Egret. The species was adversely affected by plume hunting in the United States and extirpated from Florida in early 1900’s (Powell et al. 1989). It was recorded again in Florida in 1937 (Davis 1937, Desmond 1939) and since then has recolonized much of its former range

Dark morph adults are rich grayish blue bodies with vivid pinkish-cinnamon head and neck.

This bird stood patiently as we walked by, it did not seem to mind us at all. We pulled up our chairs that we were carrying and sat for a spell. I did capture some video as well and will show that at a later time.

In the stately and dignified world of herons, Reddish Egrets are the swashbuckling cousins. These big, cinnamon and steely gray birds put on a show as they forage in shallow saltwater.

  2. What a great find – a beautiful bird with this plumage and it makes the Great Blue Heron (which always looks gray to me) look rather plain doesn’t it? The eyes, fixated ahead – beautiful.

    1. I was surprised you mentioned one after I had seen one. I went back to the same place a second time and it was there again. We sat down and just watched it for awhile.

      1. They are still endangered. The red algae that is toxic can be fatal to them. Other birds will move off to different feeding areas but Reddish have a ‘tiny’ habitat (extreme coastal waters) so stay where they ingest the toxins.

        1. I was wondering that, the information I found said they were doing okay in some areas, but in Texas the numbers were not good.

    1. That is not a stupid question at all Mr. Ohh, I was wondering the same thing why they call it that. What I understand is, it means it is not breeding season, so they are not as colorful as they are during the breeding season. It is interesting how they come up with these names. I thought the same thing, how do they reproduce, but it only refers to the season. 😊

  3. Wonderful photography Sandra. Thank you. A relatively rare distinct bird on a rebound track. I’m glad y’all got to spend so much time at the ocean, a place where the pure natural element remains in abundance. Blessings

    1. Thank you very much RJ, it is so exciting to see all this new wildlife in different places of this amazing planet. The beauty never ceases to amaze me.

    1. Yes, that is what I thought as well. We were walking back to our car off of the beach and there it was standing in the shallow water. Good thing I take the camera with 🙂

    1. Yes, I did not know what it was at first. I had to get on the computer to look this one up. The reddish feathers are so pretty. 🙂

    1. Thank you, yes it was quite something and I went back 2 days later in hopes of seeing it again. Luckily it was there and sat for a spell and watched it.

          1. Here climate tell means rain and shine going on 🌦
I had Booster vaccine 3rd taken and two days
suffering hand pain and body pain and today ok 👍🏻
Happy Wednesday and grace wishes 👏😊♥️

  4. Reddish Egrets are such a joy to watch – did you get a chance to wittiness their hunting ballet with their wings raised. Unlike many of the other herons/egrets, the reddish. Gorgeous shots with crisp detail.

    1. I had heard that about them, how they fish and dance around. The second day we saw it we had our chairs with , so I got as close as I could, unfolded my chair and sat down, adjusted one camera to video and waited. Boy do they have patients. It stretched once and yawned a couple times. When it finally moved to go get a snack, I followed it with the camera and it grabbed a couple fish and then went and stood on one leg again. No dance or wing movement. But it was still exciting to sit and watch it.

    1. It really was, we went to find it a second time and it was still there. Usually when I go back to find the same bird they are gone. It is such a beautiful bird with the reddish feathers.

  5. Great discovery and pictures, Sandra! That is good to know that they are not extinct. Such a serious look in the last two pictures. And such a powerful leg that it can handle the body (without any scare of arthritis).

    1. It was so exciting to see, I love getting to see a new bird like this. New to my eyes I mean. I was able to sit down near it as well and just enjoy watching such a beautiful bird. They can stand there like that for so long, I did witness it stretching out its one leg tucked up and giving a couple yawns.
