Pileated Woodpecker Speed
Pileated Woodpecker Speed – Pileated Woodpeckers are known for their speed, agility, and power. They are able to fly up to 30 miles per hour and sustain speeds of over 60 miles per hour when diving.
Additionally, Pileated Woodpeckers have been known to use their strong bills to chip away at tree trunks at a rate of up to 20 times per second. This combination of speed and strength makes Pileated Woodpeckers one of the most impressive birds in the Pileated woodpecker family.
I took a lot of photos to get these 4 good ones of this bird in flight. I am using a 600 mm lens and the weight of this camera is about 6 lbs. and moving it back and forth tilted up at the bird is a challenge by itself.
But I always like a good challenge. 🙂

Wow!
Mission accomplished! You made gorgeous photos of that speedy little bird, Sandra!
Thank you Kellye. It is amazing how fast they fly and normally you don’t see them out in the open like this one. A fun challenge it was.
That is a good idea. 😊😊
Well you overcame that challenge with the camera and got some great, in-flight shots of this woodpecker. I’ve watched a Red-bellied Woodpecker dig for grubs in a tall, dead tree at Council Point Park and wondered how much of a headache he gets with the constant head movement? Same with this Woodpecker!
I know, they are built just right for doing that.
Wow! nice capture. i actually saw one this morning on my walk.
Thank you very much Marland. I usually hear them way before I see them.
These are such shy elusive birds — amazing to see these flight photos 🤩
Thank you very much 😊
Wow! I have yet to see one.
They are so pretty, their size alone makes them amazing birds. 😊
Nice in-flight action photos.
Thank you Brad, it was a challenge for sure to get these 🙂
Wow I had not idea they could fly so fast. I enjoy listening to our pileated pair talk back and forth.
Yes, they are very hard to photograph in flight. We have a pair here as well. I love their chattering.
Wow! 💙🧡🧡🐦💙💙🙏
Thank you very much Francine 🙂
Great pictures but I have to comment You said at the top “The Pileated Woodpeckers one of the most impressive birds in the Pileated woodpecker family.” Just how big is the Pileated Woodpecker family? It’s like saying Mr. Ohh! is the best looking man in the Mr. Ohh! family. Yea I look okay, but there’s really not much to compare to.
🤣😎🙃
I did not know that as well until I saw this article about the different species. There is another one called the Ivory Billed Woodpecker that looks very similar to the Pileated. So I think they meant there are different sizes and similar ones to this one. 🙂 I like that, Mr. Ohh is the best looking man in the Mr Ohh family. 🙂 it is very similar to the meaning of the different species of pileated. 🙂 😅

Thank you very much 🙂
Looks like a little bandit!
They do, 🙂
