Percentage of Bad Photos

Percentage of Bad Photos

Percentage of Bad Photos – What is the percentage on average of photos that don’t make the cut and end up on the editing floor so to speak.

Well on average 2 out of 20 photos will be good when you are photographing a series or trying to follow a subject like wildlife.

Here are some perfect examples. I am trying to photograph this red squirrel, who by the way can move very fast.

Leaf in the way, no good

Below is a short video showing this squirrel moving so quickly, you can see why they are hard to photograph. I put the music from mission impossible movie with this clip. It fits pretty well 🙂 or click here; Mission Impossible Red Squirrel

Red Squirrel on a mission impossible to sneak some food. #shorts

Oh the expression, he seems a bit perturbed with me and would rather eat in peace. Bird seed doesn’t come free for these guys, the deal is they have to get their photos taken. I am pretty sure they signed a contract somewhere along the line. Maybe just in my mind. 🙂

Come back here

Who knows what happened here

The odds are right on, I had two good photos out of 18. I did not put all the bad ones on here. Just keep that in mind when you are out taking photos. They will never all be perfect, but photography is like playing golf to me. When you get that one awesome shot, it just makes me want to keep going and do more. Have a great weekend.

Have a great weekend. 🙂

  1. Ha ha – I come home with a lot of blurred birds but a good share of blurred squirrels as well or just snouts or just tails … but when they pose nicely, they sure are cute and you have captured this one perfectly after the boo-boos. 🙂

  2. LOL! That just makes the ones that aren’t blurs or happened a moment past the exact moment you hoped to capture all the more precious. I got a good chuckle out of the failures! I go through this process of endless failures for a few successes taking photos of my cat Andy for my blog. Oh the horror! The pain!

    1. Yes, the bad photos are quite fun to look at. I know what you mean when photographing my cay or dogs. They sit perfectly still until I point the camera at them.

  3. Yes! Success! Thanks for this, Sandra. It makes me appreciate your work all the more knowing you have to work so hard to get those few great shots. That little dude was determined to make it difficult. As I think about it, what other creature is like a squirrel? They are unique little guys that often appear over-anxious but cause more anxiety by their seemingly nonsensical antics. Is this why the term “squirrel-brained” was created?

And then I watched the short… Proved my point to the nth degree. Great film! The soundtrack is perfect. Have a great weekend

    1. Thank you very much RJ, yes photographing animals is always a fun challenge. Looking at the bad photos can be just as much fun. Have a great weekend also.

  4. It’s nice to know that even the pros sometimes have bad photos too. It makes this non-pro feel better about all of her bad ones. Your video cracked me up, and the Mission Impossible theme was the perfect music for it. Have a great weekend.

    1. Thank you Kellye, yes there are always more bad photos especially with wildlife, but it is always fun going through all the goofy photos. Good for a smile. Have a wonderful weekend also.

  5. On my return trip from Tennessee a couple of weeks ago, I saw the sun rise just after driving around Columbus, Ohio. I set the phone to clip randomly toward the sun so that I could concentrate on the road, very few cars and before rush hour (going in the other direction even then. And I do not know if I got 2 out of 20. I drove so that a tree blocked the sun, and there were trucks driving in the opposite direction. But as for your video, I needed the laugh this morning. The music was perfect, and almost perfectly synced with all the squirrel’s antics. Thanks.

    1. You are very welcome Mark. Yes creation has a way of lifting us up and making us smile. I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

  6. It’s good to know that it I’m not a bad (amature) photographer for having to take so many shots to get a decent one. I loved the Mission Impossible music with the squirrel. You made me smile, Sandra.

    1. I know exactly what you mean. I figure maybe I can fix that one or another one. They go into my someday file. Then one day I have to sort through all of those. 😬😅

  7. That sounds about like the percentage of usable photos I get. Good advice for new photographers — don’t give up, and take lots of photos, you never know what you will capture.

    1. It is so true Marland. Keeps me going. I used to golf years ago and that one great drive that I would get made me want to do it again, even though my final score was never up to par. 😅

  8. Haha, this is funny Sandra. Not many know this secret, a good photo takes time and dedication.

Loved the photos either way, have a great weekend! 🐿️🤎
