Lots of Colorful Birds

Lots of Colorful Birds

Lots of Colorful Birds, I still have a few photos to go through that I took from our visit to the gulf coast, we stayed long enough to see the spring migration of birds coming across the ocean. At first I was just not seeing anything, we drove all over the place looking at the hotspots where other birders said to go in this area.

The last couple of weeks we were there, all of a sudden flocks of the most colorful birds were landing in the trees right in our campground. Eating all these dried seeds on this tree in the photos below.

Grosbeaks, orioles, tanagers and lots of warblers, it was a thrill to see them all.

The hummingbirds made it as well, such a long flight for all the birds. There are always stories of how the birds land on boats and gas rigs out in the gulf waters. So they can rest for a bit before making it to land.

    1. It was quite the sight Beth, there were dozens of all these beautiful colors in a couple trees that had dried seeds on them.

  1. Even when we warm up again (it’s chilly here again), I still don’t think we’ll be lucky enough to see all these pretty birds. You got the hummingbird in mid-flight. 🙂

    1. I have seen those orange blossoms here and there. I don’t know what they are but they seem to grow really tall.

      1. They’re a “false honeysuckle”… sold to me as true honeysuckle. I had 2 in plastic pots. They got flooded one year and both died. 2yrs later, they reappeared! One broke through its pot and is now massive… tall & wide (many many stalks/vines). Some vines are 4” thick! It’s out of control, growing over the neighbor’s property, so I’ll probably cut it all down this next winter, keeping some to restart in clay pots, further from the fence.

I can see one in a neighbor’s backyard that is growing up a pole and probably 20′ tall x 10′ diameter.

Last year, I got a hummingbird nest and eggs (momma abandoned the nest right after laying the eggs).

        1. That is what I have seen, they are vines and just keep growing. I have never seen a hummingbirds nest. They must be so tiny.

  2. How exciting! We were thrilled to watch a dozen cedar waxwings land in a Hawthorne tree for a berry feast. To see such a dazzling display of variety and color would be memorable.

      1. They flock to our syringas as well. I enjoy how trim and neat they are in their little tan suit of feathers.

    1. It was wonderful, I never thought I would see that many bright colored birds in one spot. Almost like yours over there. 😊
