Lightning in the Night

Lightning in the Night

Lightning in the Night, my first photos of lightning. A fast moving storm rolled in with only heat lightning at first and then I saw a few lightning bolts in the night sky. It was about 11:30 pm and I decided to go out onto the porch and see if I could get a few shots of the night lights covering the sky.

I wasn’t sure if the camera was picking it up at first. All of these photos were taken with a Go Pro camera, I did not get any on my regular camera. There is another storm rolling in today, so I will be trying it again though.

  1. Very cool pictures Sandra – interesting how purple the sky looks (except for the one photo, more bluish). Looks like hairline cracks in the sky!

    1. Thank you Linda, it was fun to try after the storm eased up a bit. The colors are from the white balance setting on the camera. I changed it once to see if it would pick up more light.

  2. very impressive. I have not tried to do any lightning photos, We don’t seem to have many lightning storms, although sometimes I do see the flash during a thunderstorm. Your work is excellent, looking forward to seeing some more. 🙂

    1. Thank you very much, yes I don’t see that many hear either. This one was mostly flash lightning at first and then I saw a few bolts, so I thought I would give it a try.

      1. a good try! I never thought of trying to capture lightning in a photo. I appreciate your advice about how to time the flash with the shutter.

  3. WOW Sandra. These are great. Love the way you keep exploring all facets of the natural world with your work. Pretty brave thing to do on this occasion. I am especially impressed by the third photo because it shows the branching lightning bolts heading off in different directions with one coming right toward the viewer. Thanks and Blessings

    1. Thank you RJ, once the storm started to ease up a bit, I decided to venture out onto the porch. The power of lightning and how it works is so amazing. 😊

    1. There are a few different ways, I used time lapse on one camera and I tried the interval shooting on the DSLR camera. Time lapse works really well, at 1 second intervals. It took about 400 shots and I had 10 shots that captured lightning.

      1. Okay, that sounds similar to fireworks, except there is a better hit rate with f/w. Thank goodness for digital – just think how many rolls of useless film we’d be throwing away otherwise!

          1. The most wasteful day I think I ever had was at the racetrack. Just getting that perfect image… totally crisp car but with just the rightamount of motion blur in the wheels and background…
I shot over 1,000 that day for a dozen good images.

            1. I know exactly what you mean. I love looking at the photos later as much as taking the photos. It is so exciting to get just that one photo that makes me smile and go wow.

    1. Yes, the storm was coming right at me, I did not go out at first, but then it eased up a bit so it was ok to go out on my porch and try a few shots.
