Just a Little Wind Today

Just a Little Wind Today

Just a Little Wind Today, on this particular day the wind was blowing very hard so I decided to go up to Lake Superior to see how big the waves might be. Well, when it is windy at the lake, the water takes on different colors, there is a lot of clay and it gets all stirred up on windy days. (video below)

So I was just walking along the beach, looking at all the trees laying on the beach and watching the waves coming in. It is pretty loud when the weather conditions are like this.

Waves have been known to be pretty big up here in certain areas along the shorelines.

Lake Superior buoys north of Marquette, Mich., part of the Great Lakes Observing Systemrecorded waves of 28.8 feet, the highest ever recorded on the Great Lakes. The measurement is an average of the tallest third of the waves over a ten-minute period, which means some waves could have been even higher.

And today some folks were taking advantage of the waves and the wind. These look like flying bonnets. 🙂

But no, they are a couple of para sailors. I watched them for awhile, now it is pretty cold up here today also. I have to give them credit, they made it look like fun.

Just one Ringed Billed Gull happen to fly by as I was sitting on this log enjoying a wonderful day at the lake.

  1. I enjoyed the photos and video Sandra – the rust colors in the water match the sail. In the video, does the para-sailor trip on a wave and fall down or is that part of his “routine” as it happened twice. Very relaxing watching the video and it sure was windy!

    1. Thank you Linda, from what I saw everytime he did a jump in the air, because of the waves I think he just fell when he hits the water. But they bobb right back up and just keep going. That has to take a lot of strength to do that. It was fun to watch.

    1. 😊 thank you very much, yes, it has a strange look to it on windy days. Kind of like cool aid, 😊 I like that.

    1. Yes Mary, I love it as well. Did you get to see all the colors. I left up there a little early this year, so I missed all the color. I will be there next year though.

    1. Thank you very much Phil, it is hard to get colorful photos up here on the lake when it is windy. The waves turn up all the clay. 😊

  2. Wow – Love the video. I did not know a lake could look like an ocean. I lived just blocks away from Lake Champlain on the Vermont side, and as huge as it is I never saw it look like that.

    1. Thank you Grace, yes Lake Superior gets what they call the lake effect winds. This lake is known for strong winds and huge waves. I think because of its location in the north. It is fun to be there on windy days though.😊

  3. I didn’t realize you lived by Lake Superior, Sandra. What glorious pictures! The sense of vastness is intense as well as the power within those waves. Those parachuters have guts to do what they are. Thank you for braving the winds …. OH I know how those are!!

    1. Right now Amy I live up there and in Iowa, we are making the move up there permanently soon. So today I am in Iowa, for the winter and come spring I will be back up there. I have photos I took from September still that I have not used from up there. So i am all over the pla e with my blog right now. 😊 thank you Amy, have a wonderful day.

        1. Thank you Amy, yes I am looking forward to going back to where I grew up. It is beautiful country. But I have enjoyed Iowa as well, completely different but still pretty.😊

    1. Yes, the waves are pretty big, and there are some places where the beach is disappearing because the water crashes up against the shoreline and the trees eventually fall over. One year there were so many trees tou could barely walk anywhere on the beach.

  4. Wow! Lake Superior on a windy day looks nothing short of an ocean. Love the discarded tree branches and the empty beach. I prefer a crowded sky. 🙂

    1. I like going there on windy days, like you said, there are not to many people. It gets pretty cold standing there when that wind is coming across the water.
