July Went out With a Bang

July Went out With a Bang

July Went out With a Bang as a shelf cloud came across the land a few days ago.

Shelf clouds are harmless themselves but typically indicate strong storms. Shelf clouds form at the leading edge of a thunderstorm. If you see a shelf cloud coming your way, it probably means you are about to get hit by a strong thunderstorm.

I have seen two in my lifetime and they are quite interesting cloud formations and make great photos if you are quick enough. Usually they are moving pretty fast.

This one below I took a couple of years ago, it was a much worse storm behind it then the one above. Even though the one last week did dump over 2 inches of rain and very high winds.

    1. Thank you Linda, yes I just learned of them a couple of years ago when I saw my first one. They are quite something to see.

    1. Thank you Sam, I appreciate that. It was quite the storm. Always have a camera ready, never know what might pop up. 🙂

    1. Thank you very much Wally. I almost missed it, I went outside and looked west and there it was starting to build. I grabbed one camera ran outside and no card in it. Quick went in and got the other camera. They move really fast.

    1. Thank you very much, it was a surprise to see them. I went outside and it was moving fast, I almost missed getting the shot. 😊

  2. What awesome cloud images! Great timing on your part to capture them so clearly. I hope the ensuing storms brought cooler temperatures and improved humidity levels.

    1. Thank you and yes they did. The humidity was gone and woke up the next day to 48 deg F in the morning. I love those temps.

    1. Thank you very much, yes it is the high winds behind them that hit with a lot of force. No damage from this one though. Lots of rain.

  3. That’s an impressive sight when a cloud like this comes your way…. great for photography but on the other hand also the sign of coming danger. I think you will always pray for the best Sandra…

    1. Yes, there are always some high winds pushing a cloud like this. Both times I have seen one is from my front porch, so taking cover is real close.
