Eyes of Blue
Eyes of Blue, I think this bird is a cormorant, But I am not sure which one. As I type this I am adding the Merlin bird finding app to my phone. So now it should be easier to identify all these birds.
Someone was showing me the app and it will actually tell you the bird by listening to its call as well. Technology is amazing. So much better then having to get an encyclopedia out like the old days. 🙂

The Merlin App is incredible and really does help out in the field if you are not sure what you are looking at – especially when you can get them to call/sing on the Sound ID portion. That is a cormorant – aqua marine eyes and the sharp hook on the top bill. Since you can see yellow on the lores (between bill and eyes) that indicates it is a Double-Crested vs the Neotropical.
Thank you for the name. Those eyes are incredible. I never noticed them before.
Very pretty, Sandra!
Thank you very much Kellye. 😊
That beak shape makes me think Cormorant and how they are in the water, looking like a sea serpent to me. I’ve never seen a Cormorant that color, just black, or is that Winter plumage maybe?
I thought so, it’s color threw me off ad well.
I don’t know birds’ coloring that well to know their Summer versus Winter plumage, so good thing for your Merlin app. I always know Cormorants by their hooked bills and outstretched wings when drying them.
I love the Merlin app!
Me to 😊

Nice capture, Sandra, and beautiful eyes. I have become a huge fan of the Merlin App, both for the photo ID and the new sound ID option.
Thank you Ellen, yes I love using the sound option. We always have it on when out walking. Plus it identified a Kestrel and then we played it back which attracted two of them to come closer and I got a photo of it. Such a handy app.
Certainly looks like a cormorant Sandra, and the blue eyes help confirm it, though it is not one of the 5 species found in our part of the world.
I had never noticed the eye color before. Quite pretty for sure.
Very beautiful pictures!
Thank you very much 😊
Fraaie opnamen hoor, ik heb niet kunen vinden, dat de aalscholver familie van de fuut zou zijn.
Thank you Edward, yes I believe it is a cormorant, I found that out after I looked it up when I got home. I have never seen one with eyes like this one.
Lovely photos as always Sandra. Thanks for sharing.
You are very welcome, thank you 😊
I love the Merlin app, especially for sounds. I think it’s a type of cormorant Sandra.
Thank you Denzil, it is such a useful tool isn’t it. I have been using it all the time. You are right, it is a cormorant. I have never seen one with such blue eyes as this. 😊

Thank you very much 😊
Those are wonderful pictures.
Thank you, it’s eyes almost match the color of the water.
The photos look amazing as always, Sandra. I agree, nowadays technology is like a open encyclopedia.
Have a great day! 💙
Thank you Katherine. Technology sure makes things easier at times. Now it is actually amazing to me, the thought of how they organized the encyclopedia and printed them. I remember using them all the time for school work.
It is, and it completely changes everything. I remember that when I was in school, there were few encyclopedias to draw inspiration from, and the library was scarce.
