Crawfish Farms

Crawfish Farms

In this part of Louisiana, crawfish farming isn’t just common—it’s part of the landscape and the livelihood. The last time we visited, earlier in the year, the fields were dry and quiet, waiting for their season. But this time, from above, everything had changed.

The fields were flooded, transforming the land into a patchwork of shimmering water. Long, precise lines and gentle terraces stretched across the horizon, forming patterns that feel almost like artwork—carefully designed, yet shaped by purpose. Each levee, each flooded section, is part of a system that controls water levels, supports rice rotation, and creates the ideal environment for crawfish to thrive.

There’s a practical beauty to it all. These patterns aren’t just for show—they’re the result of years of refinement in aquaculture, balancing land, water, and timing.

Crawfish farming is also a major economic driver in the region. Louisiana produces the vast majority of the nation’s crawfish, with the industry generating hundreds of millions of dollars each year. For many families, these fields represent steady income and generational work, tied closely to the rhythms of the seasons.

What stood out most on this visit was the growth. New fields were being carved out and prepared, a sign that the demand—and the tradition—is still expanding. From the ground, it’s agriculture. From the air, it’s something more—an evolving canvas shaped by both nature and human hands.
