Camping Near the Ohio River
Camping Near the Ohio River, the leaves have not changed color here yet as we stopped to camp for a few days. Early morning campfires are going as the smoke is highlighted by the sun rays through the trees.
You can see the bridge off in the distance where you can travel across it and enter Kentucky, yes the Ohio river between Illinois and Kentucky.
We have camped here a couple of times. I took this photo below a couple of years ago from the same park. Sunrise at the Ohio river.
A few photos of the critters around the park are always fun to take. I am guessing this is a ground hog and I don’t think he is seeing his shadow this fall yet. That might be good news.
And these guys are just basking in the morning light. Turtles are always fun to watch.

I love morning campfires! And it is a groundhog, or as some would say, it is a woodchuck!
Yes, me to Marland. Campgrounds are the best, people are so nice and friendly as well. π
For sure! Nice and Friendly, people are sp pleasant to be around.
Very pretty sunrise and sun’s early rays at the campsite. Yes, that groundhog looks the one I ran into at Elizabeth Park. Roly poly and begging for treats (as bad as the squirrels!)
Yes, they don’t seem to mind people to much.
Beautiful!
Thank you very much π
These are just beautiful! Do you mind sharing the name of the campground? I want to put it on my list of places to go!
Hi Sara, yes it is Fort Massac State park, right on the Kentucky border. Great little campground. Miles of bike trails as well.
Thanks!

Great place for a camping site and a wonderful sunset.
Thank you Rudi, it is a wonderful park along the river.
The photo of a turtle is very interesting is there a lot of animals in the river like this?
Yes, lots of turtles all along the edge of the river, there were dozens of them here, you could see them floating along and then dive back in the water.
If that’s the case. The river ecosystem there is still well preserved. What an amazing thing.
Yes, seems to be plenty of life in the river, fish jumping every where also in the mornings.
