Bumblebees

Bumblebees

Bumblebees are one of the most important pollinators in the world. They are hard at work right now in my gardens. They are covered in pollen and busy little bees. They are so round and plump looking. They don’t mind my camera being near them at all.

There wings beat 130 or more times a minute.

  1. Echoing David’s comment above: my science teachers all told me bumblebees should not be able to fly based on what engineers think they know about aerodynamics. Maybe they have a tad more to learn — the engineers not the bees. The bees have the flying part down cold.

  2. I remember reading years ago that bumble bees should not be able to fly, aerodynamically speaking, no matter how fast their little wings beat. Yet they do, and they do it loaded down with pollen.

    1. Yes, and right now there pollen sacks on their legs are full. That alone looks like it would add so much weight to their little bodies.
