Blue Eyed White Pelican
Blue Eyed White Pelican, well I am back in my element of birding today. I have jumped ahead a bit to share these photos. We are in Idaho right now and camping next to a lake. It is so nice to be by water after all the dry months of traveling in the south. But I still have plenty of photos to share from down there as well.
We set up camp at this lake near Boise Idaho and right away I noticed white pelicans off in the distance. So I got the camera out and pulled up a chair and here they came flying right over top of me. What a wonderful sight after all these months on the road.
There is just something magical about watching these large birds glide in the air.
I noticed this ones eye is such a pretty blue. Maybe they are all that color. I will have to find out this week.
Below a group of them were flying by and I have never taken a photo of them flying with their bills open like the second one from the front. You suppose they like to fly like that catching the wind like a dog does when they put their heads out the car window? π

Same problem as Priscilla’s blog when I try to comment
You always loved your white pelicans – now to find more of them and study their eyes.
Yes, I never noticed their eye color like this. I will have to go back and look at some older photos.
How unique having blue eyes like that!
Always enjoy seeing Pelican shots – yes, their eyes are a pretty blue hue. Now I have never seen one with an open mouth in flight before – how interesting.
I thought so also Brian. I would think that would be some wind drag with the bill open.
Great shots! What focal length did you use for such great close-ups?
I almost always use 600 mm, and then some cropping to bring it in closer.
EXCELLENT POSTππ

You captured the white pelicans beautifully. They come south to Florida in the winter and it’s always a treat to see them.
Thank you very much, they fly so graceful and soar so beautifully.
Gorgeous photos. Pelicans are among my favorite birds. They remind me of the old fashioned float planes (for whatever reason).
I can picture that, I love their wing spans in flight.

Pelicans with their unique beaks are a joy to watch when they are fishing.
Yes, the white pelicans sometimes just carry their fish for awhile and I have seen others follow that one until finally he decides to have it go down the hatch. π
Great closeup shots of these pelicans Sandra.
Thank you Rudi, I do enjoy watching pelicans fly, they are always so nice and slow but graceful in the air.
