A Rare Sighting in Nature

A Rare Sighting in Nature

A Rare Sighting in Nature, what a surprise I found the other day. I was out wandering around, something I do often and I looked over at my feeder and there in the grass is this tiny little all white squirrel.

I did some research and it says that white squirrels are rare and if they have black eyes, it is do to pigmentation for the fur to be white. But it says most white squirrels come from the gray squirrel species.

But I do not think this is a gray squirrel, I believe it is a red squirrel.

Here is a photo of a red squirrel next to the white one and they are about the same size.

Where as this photo below is a gray squirrel and notice how much bigger the ears are.

  2. So lovely๐Ÿ’™, You captured them just in time, everytime I try to click a squirrel, they just jump away๐Ÿ˜€

  3. White squirrels are absolutely adorable – a lot of them turn out to be albinos or leucistic, but there are naturally occurring white squirrels – we really like seeing the colony they have in Brevard, NC.

  4. This is absolutely fascinating. I donโ€™t think Iโ€™ve ever heard of a white squirrel before! Thank you for sharing this ๐Ÿฅฐ

  5. Aww how beautiful! I do agree with you about the type of squirrel it is.
We have black squirrels here (not normally) and theyโ€™re pretty cool looking. Theyโ€™re big like the grey squirrels and some even have a charcoal shade to them. ๐Ÿ˜

(Iโ€™ve rescued & raised two grey squirrels!)

      1. Yes! While researching how to care for them I came across a quote that said something along the lines of โ€œif youโ€™ve gotten the chance to rescue a squirrel, that is the most love theyโ€™ll ever feel in this cold worldโ€ ๐Ÿฅบ and my heart just broke. Wish I could rescue them all now lol

  7. What a cutie pie Sandra – I’d be tempted to scoop him/her up and take it home with me, kind of like the folks who rescued Jill the Squirrel (an Eastern Gray squirrel) after a hurricane and now she lives with them and they spoil her silly. Jill is an internet sensation. ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. He was adorable ๐Ÿฅฐ
Iโ€™ve never seen a white one, but living in Texas, I probably wonโ€™t ever! We are too hot for anything that light to survive outside.

  9. Wow, that is rare. And, usually red and gray squirrels fight over territory, they are rarely seen together unless one is chasing the other.

    1. Yes, I have mostly red squirrels and occasionally they sit near each other, but it doesn’t take long for them to squabble.

  10. This little white squirrel is too cute but I like the others too. He’s a little youngster. ๐Ÿ˜‰
    Beautiful photos, Sandra. ๐Ÿ˜€

  11. The grey squirrel has ears in a Y-shape!
We used to have red squirrels in England. I remember seeing them in London when I was little. There’s no red squirrels in London now, in fact I don’t know if red squirrels have survived anywhere in England. Red squirrels have been supplanted by grey squirrels imported from America in the 19th century. The only place reds seem to have survived in any numbers is Scotland where they populate the pinewoods.
European red squirrels have tufty ears, but the British ones are less tufty.
I wrote pretty much everything I know about red squirrels in this post. Just in case you’re interested, hint hint! ๐Ÿฟ๏ธ

    1. Thank you very much, I love learning more about animals from others here. I lived down in the mid west for years and there wasn’t any red squirrels there. But a lot of gray and black squirrels. ๐Ÿ˜Š
