The Two Love Birds

The Two Love Birds

The Two Love Birds, I have a pair of Cardinal birds who have been living in my back yard for years now. They are mates and build a nest every year in the pine tree out back. I have photographed them many time. They have a ritual that they do everyday. They both land on my bird feeder and feed each other food.

But it looks like they are kissing also. I have not gotten a photo of them doing this yet, but I did get a video of them kissing/feeding each other. Video is below.

The Two Love Birds male cardinal

The male Cardinal patrols the backyard and chases away any other cardinal that thinks it can come to the feeding table.

This is how I capture video in the backyard. I set up a go pro camera along with my bridge camera. And let the backyard critters do all the work of having fun and showing off for the cameras.

This is just a fun little video of the Cardinals looking like they are kissing and a few other critters in my backyard.

    Bises amicales
    Bernard

  2. LOVE this video! You captured so many of my favorites beautifully, even a black squirrel, which are becoming more common it seems. But the stars, as you portrayed, are definitely the cardinals! Have a great day!

  3. Great pictures and video, Sandra. Thanks. You gotta love all the interaction and different critters. Cardinals are always a treat. What is that yellow bird?

    1. Thank you RJ, the yellow bird is a Goldfinch, it is actually the state bird of Iowa also. They are such a bright yellow in the summer.

      1. Okay! I’m getting up to speed. Thanks. Ours in Texas is the mockingbird. Pretty sure the goldfinch has a better attitude.

  4. Mr. and Mrs. Cardinal used to visit daily on the balcony. Alas, I’ve not seen them in months. I do miss those two. Thanks for the lovely photos; they remind me of my handsome couple.

    1. Yes, it is so much fun to sit in the backyard and watch the critters going back and forth. Always something going on. 🙂

  5. I love that video Sandra – I have never seen a Catbird and funny how it kept looking up in the beginning. I love how the cardinals are feeding each other. I miss having the birdfeeders and having the birds come there and watching them. I had some pictures of them in the birdbath, but not fun pictures and not a video like this. I am envious of the birdlife in your backyard!

    1. Thank you Linda, I have wanted to put a bird bath in. They really love them when they are close to the feeders. I had one years ago. It took awhile to get these birds to come back to my feeder after the winter. Not as many as last year. But I love the Cardinals the most, being they make a nest every year here.

      1. I liked having the bird baths – it was funny as I had two regularsized ones, a medium one and small one. The bigger birds would go into the smaller baths – always made me smile to see that. I had to get rid of the four baths due to the rats and never went back to it again. Gave the food to a guy who runs a small bird sanctuary in Roscommon. All gone now. My neighbor had all the hummingbird feeders around her house – she used a skinny birdbath and bought a solar pump to make tiny geysers and mists for birds, especially hummers. It worked well on sunny days, some other days if a hint of sun too. I did not see the Cardinal pair at the barberry bush yesterday so I wonder if their babies fledged.

  6. When I first moved to Pennsylvania in 1996, I struck up a friendship with the group secretary. She was a smoker, and when Spring had sprung, she invited me to take a smoke break with her. I don’t smoke, but I was curious what she was doing. The office building was surrounded by tall trees and she fed the birds. We had a few titmouse, sparrows, an occasional cardinal, crows, etc. But we also had squirrels and chipmunks. By the end of the summer, she had a couple of chipmunks that would grab a peanut from her hand, but they ran what they thought was a safe distance, jammed it into their cheek and then ran into the grass. If a blue jay ever showed up, that was the end of the bird feeding. The small birds disappeared when the crows and cardinals would come by, but they immediately returned once the big birds were fed. But the blue jay, forget it. They’d find food elsewhere.

    1. I know that hierarchy so well in bird world. They know who is at the top of the food chain. It is amazing to watch. The blue Jay’s rule the feeder. I have never had a bird or critter eat out of my hand yet. But someday, they sure know when I bring the food out. Thank you for sharing Mark, have a wonderful evening.

        1. I have been feeding birds my entire life at one place or the other. I really enjoy just watching them at the feeders. I have a family of rabbits also. Most people think all these critters are a nuisance, but I love it. 🙂
