The American Red Squirrel, We had a touch of blue sky’s today making for a colorful background for this little guys picture today.

The most noticeable characteristics of the American red squirrel are the tail and the eye ring. The tree squirrel’s tail is bushy and dark red with hints of a white outline. The eye ring is a thick, white circle around the rodent’s black eyes.

    1. Yes, they are so cute. We hung a bird house above one of the feeders and I saw this squirrel go into it yesterday. I did not think it would fit but it did. He has a new winter home now.

      1. Oh, I bet he is happy … big enough to go in and out to forage or scam some bird seed but small enough to curl up in to sleep. He lucked out.

    1. Yes, those bigger squirrels are always chasing each other. And then my dog chases them down the fence line. πŸ™‚

  1. Wonderful photos! Squirrels are so much fun to watch and to compete with over benches in the park πŸ™‚ Years ago, when I had a yard and bird feeders and battled squirrels constantly, I finally gave up and simply scattered seeds for them on the ground. Everyone was happy and had plenty to eat. Have you ever seen an Abert’s squirrel in Colorado? I prefer to call them vampire squirrels LOL!

    1. Thank you Mary, yes I do that also. The squirrels leave the feeders alone when I scatter seed on the ground. Some else mentioned the the abert squirrel and I looked it up. I have never seen one before, so different from the regular squirrels.

  2. Very cute. Do you know what their range is? Don’t you have grey squirrels in your area too? We only have grey squirrels in central VA. I have seen red squirrels out in Pacific Grove, CA, on the Monterey peninsula.

    1. Yes, they are found mostly in the north part of the states and Canada. I am up north right now, but down in Iowa is where the bigger more colorful squirrels are like the grays. πŸ™‚

  3. Lovely pics. Very different to our British Red Squirrel which is a glorious rusty red all over with tufted ears and a very bushy tail.

  4. Lovely photos as always. I am waiting for our Belgian red squirrels to sit still for an instant so I can photograph them πŸ˜† They are different to yours, no eye ring, and often with blacker fur.

  5. When you had this guy in the picture the other day I meant to ask what type he was. I’ve seen grey and black squirrel. There is a kind that lives in the forest here but I’ve only ever seen one once, and that is Abert’s Squirrel.
