Celebrating Iowa Rivers Today

Celebrating Iowa Rivers Today

Celebrating Iowa Rivers Today on World Rivers Day, Sunday the 27th. A friend of mine told me that today is the celebration of rivers across the world. You can check her post Here; WALKIN’, WRITIN’, WIT & WHIMSY. And I knew I had a few river photos starting with this little one right outside of my house here in the middle of Autumn.

I know you don’t want to hear it, but soon it will look like this photo below. 😏😉

Iowa Rivers World River Day

But, lets get back to Autumn here on the Cedar River in Iowa

The Mighty Mississippi River – Photo was taken last month.

And a way to cross the Mississippi River here on the I74 Bridge which will be torn down soon. A new bridge is being built right next to it as I write this. I never did like this bridge, it is very narrow and people drive way to fast on it. But it is pretty at night.

And last, I have been hanging out down by the Mississippi River for the last few days, well, I go home at night. But the Egrets are still here, the water is low and the fishing is good for them. I pull up a chair on the bank of the river and sit there patiently watching and photographing these beautiful birds. I am still amazed that there are so many here.

I have hundreds of photos of the Egrets, so it might take me awhile to get to all of them.

  1. Such beautiful River shots for World Rivers Day Sandra. You are correct – as beautiful as the snow on the River might look, I am not ready for it yet. The golden tones of Autumn are exquisite too – that is why Autumn is my favorite season. I’ve never seen so many Egrets together, but I like the solitary Egret photo – what a beautiful bird in flight, those wings just grazing the water. Thank you for the shout-out for my blog and I apologize I was so behind that I am reading this post a day and a half after you did this post and just now acknowledging it. I knew when I told you about World Rivers Day, you would come up for the perfect post to exemplify the beauty of our rivers.

    1. Thank you Linda, I love it when you tell me of these special days, it is fun to see if I have any photos to go with it. Yes that gold color of autumn is such a warming color. And it only last for a few days after that. So the camera has to be ready to capture it.

      1. I was happy to do so and thought of you as soon as I saw it – I am really behind here after doing tasks and chores all weekend … I’m still about three days behind, but I felt badly as you acknowledged me in your post.
Then I went to a post from a fellow blogger from Berlin and she dedicated a post to me about “Eurovision” … it is a music festival held annually in Europe. She mentioned it to me a few weeks ago and she does a weekly feature on music, so she showed a video of the type of music it is. So I messed up for both of you by not being around. The River is beautiful any time and unfortunately with no more bridge, you won’t have those night shots with the colorful reflections on the water … how long will it take to dismantle it I wonder?

        1. You never have to say your sorry Linda. Good friends never require that. Sometimes life is more important then the internet. Remember pen pals and back in the days of sending a letter in response to a letter received. I am not sure, but did it not take days to hear a reply if it did not get lost in transit. I know you are there and you just enjoy your days. The internet can always wait. Have a wonderful day.

          1. Thank you for saying that Sandra – good friends do understand. I wish I was doing something more exciting than grocery shopping twice. In fact I was keeping up more when I was enjoying myself on the weekends! I used to do posts on both weekend days and once mid-week. Sometimes I think I should reconfigure my “posting days” – I would keep Wordless Wednesdays. I will think on that over the Winter … or maybe just post 2X a week, not 3X. You have an especially wonderful day today Sandra. Hope it is gorgeous weather for you.

            1. I know what you mean Linda, I have decided to take a day off now and then. I did not post anything today on my birthday either. Sometimes you need to take a break from the computer and just enjoy what we love to do. I had noticed I was starting to run out of photos because I wasn’t going out in the morning as much. So this scheduling has really helped with freeing up my mornings. I like that.

            2. I have been thinking about just twice a week after I use up all these Summer shots I have – that will be a while as I went out for about two weeks when we had all the gorgeous weather and took some Fall shots – I have not even looked at about 100 more shots that are in the small camera. I need to archive these photos onto a flash drive like I use to – I used to do it at the end of each quarter faithfully – it’s been a year! I’d like to do all those things over the Winter … the problem was last year I anticipated a bad Winter and it was mild so I got out more than usual. I used to post four times a week when I first began, but used none or one photo only. Short and sweet! Plus, the more I post, the more I am behind in Reader. Now going on four days, but I’ll catch up eventually, but I am lagging behind.

            3. Yes, we had some great weather the last few weeks, so getting out and about is priority for me. Otherwise I would not have anything to share. Putting one photo on would be quicker.

            4. We had rain again today but not this morning – it was gorgeous out and sunny so I could leave a little earlier and got 5 miles in. Hopefully the good weather holds so you can keep on walking and getting more photos to post.

    1. Well, isn’t that something. I lived in Cedar Rapids for a few years when I was younger, and now I am in eastern Iowa. So I have been here a few years. I really enjoyed Cedar Rapids when I was there.🙂

      1. Funny! Another commenter on my page just revealed themselves as an Iowan as well! 🙂 We’re everywhere hahaha. Do you happen to know Alburnett? That’s where I went to school.

        1. No, I did not get out that way much. I new of Center Point which is not far from there, but that is all. 🙂 Iowa is a great little state.

  2. “… well I go home at night…” made me laugh! I can see why you wouldn’t want to with all those birds around. This is a lovely river collection and I especially liked seeing the two seasons from the same spot. Your soon to be torn down bridge is quite photogenic, I hope its replacement will have some style along with better functionality.

    1. Thank you Ellen, yes when I reread it, it sounded like I was living there. So I thought I better add that. 🙂 The new bridge is very modern looking and will be wider so that is nice. I really don’t like going across that big river, I only do when we are traveling. Have a great week Ellen.

    1. Yes, we have made it this far, I guess we can do another one. 🙂 Even though I kind of like Florida in the winter, but maybe not this year. 🙂

  3. Great pictures Sandra, and great perspective regarding the seasons. Thank you and thank you for your dedication. You are blessed to live so close to these rivers and spend so much time watching the river flow. I laughed out loud at this: “Well, I go home at night.”

Enjoy the wonderful autumn. It doesn’t appear to last so long up there.

    Blessings to you

    1. Thank you so much RJ, I do love this time of year. Yes, the way I wrote it when I read it back it made it sound like I just live down at the river. I figured I better add that in. Last year, fall seemed to go by so fast and this year it taking its time. I like that. Have a wonderful day.

  4. In Louisville, there is a bridge that was discontinued. It was turned into a walking bridge. People can walk from Kentucky to Indiana and vice versa. It’s lit up beautifully at night. When I visited my sister I insisted we go and we trekked across the bridge to Indiana and back.
There are occasional street musicians along along the route.
I hope your area turns the bridge into a walking bridge.

    1. That is so nice that they did that, I do love bridges at night with the lights shinning on the river. This bridge is across the Mississippi River, I have not heard if they are going to do anything different with it. It is very old, I think about 40 some years old. There is a walking portion connected to a bridge farther down river. I have never walked on it. It is always windy and so high above the river, I think I would be to nervous to walk it. 🙂

  5. I went to school in Cedar Falls, and every year our family would make one or two trips across the Mississippi to visit family in Moline. But my favorite Iowa river has to be the Skunk; that’s where my daddy taught me to fish with a cane pole and a red and white bobber.

    1. Wonderful memories, I remember the cane fishing pole, I used that also when I was younger. I have heard of the Skunk river. So many beautiful places in Iowa, I have been here a few years now. 🙂

  6. ♡ Wolves Build a Suspension Bridge, Submarine, Fail with The Plane before Slowly Driving a Mini Van in ‘Storks’ ~ Movie 😂🤣😅😆😁😄😃😀🙂

    …♡♡♡…

    1. Thank you, it is a magnificent river, so much activity from wild life to travel. There are hundreds of species of birds that migrate along the Mississippi river. I go down there quite often , just a wonderful place.

  7. Happy river day! 🙂 That first picture is… WOW! 💕 Do you live near that beauty?! Do you realize how fortunate you are?! 💕 Oh, and tell your husband how much I liked the aerial photo. The view is amazing.

    1. Thank you very much Jo, yes, I never take it for granted now, especially as I am older and have quit rushing around in life. Yes that little river is right out front of my house. I walk along that river every morning that I can and always have my camera with. I will definitely tell the husband you liked his drone photo. He took that one just last month along a bigger river called the Mississippi. 🙂

    1. I also enjoy winter Wayne, I grew up in northern Michigan where the average snow fall is 250 inches. Last winter they got 300 inches of snow. Our cabin is up there and I plan on moving back there soon. Snow has always been a part of my life.

      1. The Fall time and Winter are two seasons I miss each year! I now live in a Temperate zone here in Tofino. I enjoyed going on a winter camp out using snowshoes/belly sled to get around. Much easier to track animals as well!

        1. The area you are in now is just gorgeous also. I looked at it on google maps. So beautiful and now you get to see the same eagles all year long. That would be nice. I was at the river a couple days ago watching the Egrets and one young Eagle came out of no where and swooped down and got a fish. I was to slow with the camera though. 🙂

            1. Yes, he was all brown with just a touch of white under the wings when I was looking at him through the zoom lens. Or her, 🙂
