23 Species of Woodpeckers
23 species of woodpeckers that reside in North America. More than 300 species of woodpeckers are known throughout the world. The Downy Woodpecker shown below is the smallest.
And this beauty here, the Pileated is the Largest of the species. He was hanging around my place again today. I recognize his call now so I know when he is in the area.
This is the Red Bellied Woodpecker
And the Flicker shown below. So I have 19 more to find.

Laughter may not be the best medicine, but it’s easiest to take

Great pictures Sandra! There is just something extra special about spotting a woodpecker.
There really is Beth, and I don’t see them to often. That might be why for me. 🙂
So cool! I saw a woodpecker last week pecking away on one of my trees. : )
They are great little birds, even the big one. They eat a lot of bugs, so that is good also 🙂
Wonderful! Thank you, Sandra. Have a great day,.

Yeah! Moving green point on a snow white field 🙂
Only 10 species of woodpeckers in my country; looking forward to see all of them. So far, I’ve only noticed 4. 🙂
Yes, it would be nice to see everyone on the list. 😊
Love’em all

CorDIAl thanks … many
That is a good way to say it, 😊, thank you.
Wow! So many species! They are so cute!
They are such a fun bird to see.and colorful.
Wow that’s a lot of species for one country! I have been fortunate enough to see a Piliated Woodpecker whilst visiting a friend in BC Canada some years ago. They are huge compared to our woodpeckers in the UK. We have 3 species here , Green, Great spotted and lesser spotted.
Someone else just mentioned they see a green one. Amazing all the colors.😊
We had some pileated woodpeckers living close to our house before there was more development. Now they have moved into a section of protected forest (south east Texas) but we enjoy all the others.
They are such a cool bird, I am glad I finally got a photo of one.
I was surprised how big they are!
Me to when I first saw them a couple years ago.
With so many species of woodpeckers life seems more healthy all of a sudden. The life of trees in any case. 🙂
Yes, they survive so well in forest where they have plenty of dead trees to work on. They eat a lot of bugs.😊
An interesting group of birds Sandra that we do not have down here. They would find our hardwoods a bit too much of a challenge I would think, especially our Iron Bark Tree, 🙂
Amazing isn’t it? How there are so many different species that were created to survive in different areas. So much beauty everywhere around us.😊
Great pictures. Up until learning this from you, especially in this post, all I knew was “woodpecker.” It was just a medium-size grey bird tapping on a tree. Now I know woodpeckers come in a variety of sizes and colors. I knew they were relatively rare, though, and your numbers confirm that. Thanks Sandra.
Me to RJ, I only saw the black and white ones until I started taking pictures. That is when I started noticing more.. There are still lots of forest up here and that is good for them for now.
